Zeroing Smith Speedo ?.

Hi,

Am nearing the end of my restoration of my 1953 Golden Flash Plunger.

When I purchased the bike it had a generic magnetic type speedo, which probably didn't work.

After much searching I now have two smiths genuine speedos, one for my nacelle plunger frame ( rear reset ) and one for the plate mounted side reset, like a gold star, not for my bike.

How do I reset the numbers to 00000, is it as simple as lifting the little tabs and rolling the number back to zero ?, or do I need to align barrels and then lift tabs and roll to zero ?.

How does the 0-9 digit, when it reaches 9, dial over the tens digit to 1 ?.

Good luck working out what the hell I'm talking about, I think I've just confused myself.

G'day Josh,
               I did mine (rear reset) about 25 years ago, can't remember exactly how but think it was your first method. You know of course it's illegal to do that over here, LOL.

I rebuilt mine earlier this year and, yes, all that is necessary is to lift the tabs and roll the wheels. I had lifted one a bit too high and bent the spring steel so that it no longer did its job. This, of course, led to a lot of dissassembly to bend it back. So, be very carful to lift them just the little bit necessary to free the wheels.

P.S. 

I had the speedo all apart down to the wheels at one time and knew at that time how the 10's advancement worked, but can't recall it exactly right now. Also, I can't recall if the wheels had to be rotated in one direction, only. I think if they move freely in both directions, then it's OK to rotate them eithr way.

Below is text from a repair guide for magnetic type, but the odometer wheel movement scheme is the same.


It is possible to change the odometer reading by rotating the wheels. The wheels have
a locking mechanism that needs to be addressed in order to make the adjustment. Early
speedometers have brass fingers under the wheels between the frame and the wheels
which prevent forward movement, or backward movement past zero. You can rotate the
wheels backward by simply turning the wheel, but you can not back up past zero. To rotate
forward or backward at will, you need to press the brass finger underneath the wheel to
disengage the lock and then spin the wheel

Richard, that topic is really some good work ! Have studied the pictures more closely for the 1st time, and have some work to do in there too, will be helpfull, and also was thinking of resetting the speedo to my actual riding distance since buying the bike.

Thanks for the offer, I have Zero'd it, it is now on the bike, soon to be riden.

Olev has suggested the maiden voyage being naked though the local mall wearing a guerilla mask, not sure thats the best option.........
