Just to update, I have put some loctite around the cam ring, refitted in mag body as suggested.
First kick away she went….

Yup! Might / will take a puller to get it out again if needed  . . . 
A gizmo like this will almost always do it on a twin as long as the armature's taper for the points backplate  is protected against the force of the screw.

Taking the cam ring out is seldom necessary when it’s not loose.

You could Mikey, yes., but it isn't something you'll be wanting to extract regularly.

I'd check the timing on both sides with what you have now got - a strobe is best if you have one available. And check that the points gaps are within, say, a couple of thou side-to-side. The interval is more important than the gap (within the bounds of common sense.)

Should you change the housing you'll need to get the bearing outer race out of the inside of yours and reseat it with a new insulator of suitable thickness in the replacement, and then repeat the above procedure to be confident all is as it should be. Mix and match can throw up some 'interesting' differences.

But if you now have smooth running, even tickover, equal sparks and equali-sh gaps I'd very much leave well alone!
