A10 1960-1963 Mudguards
« on: 12.02. 2010 02:12 »
I have been for years trying to locate front and rear mudguards for a 1962SR, dont care if they are not original or a reman, but dont want them to be fibreglass.

Any idea where I can get them from? a few years ago I asked SRM and they said theyre in the pipeline, kept looking out for them and still nothing.

Just for reference they are Part # 42-6553 (front) and # 42-6904 (rear)

Ive seen a few deep valanced type on ebay and Burton bike bits but dont believe they are the ones I need

Any advice is appreciated

G'day There,
I have a '61 S/R & had a bit of trouble tracking down guards also.
There are two diff. types of guards for the rear, the U.S. west coast
export ones are a bit shorter at the rear than the other English &
east coast version. If the front guard seems too elusive you could
use a A65 guard, they are nearly identicle, you just have to buzz of
the stay brackets, the A10 bracket will bolt on, you just drill a central
hole lower down at the rear (if that makes any sense).
Allot of rear guards have been chopped, but you can cut & shut if
you get a couple of guards that have either end.
Hope this helps,
Cus

Hi bl**dydrivers- I have a chrome one that I never used bought to fit a 1961 Flash (went Goldie route).
Depends where you are of course.
It is of the shallow valance type, not blade or deep valance don't know without looking at my 61 Flash ( under wraps) if the valance is less than standard so have included a pic
Bought from Burton IIRC (have had it stored for about five years, lightly oiled and wrapped in cheese cloth and polythene)

Let me know what you think if  your in UK

no problem

I'm not a rivet counter but that's a nice picture of an A10 but are the front mudguard and the rear brake not a few years apart, I could be wrong though.
The front mudguard is the kind on my 1961 Flash, the rear brake with up over cable is earlier ( maybe 57-58 ) and I think was only for one year, would that not be the period of the deep valance front guard.
Sorry to hijack your mail bl**dydrivers, pretty sure someone will put me right

Bill
My 61 S/R had that brake on it, before I put the t/l/s on, also the same mudguards and without going out to the shed I think the rear brake set up is the same, now I know that after nearly 50 years all sorts could have been altered, but just thought I would add my bit
Blame Bill he highjacked it first *fight*

That brake was standard on the bike, i know they changed it from the rod type but that was in the 50s to the hollow type spindle.

Anyway, back to the subject, does anyone actually know where i can get the mudguards from?

cheers

bl**dydrivers  = I had a bit of a look around but no - can't see anything other than fibre glass, I know second hand one go for lots a money, sorry it looks like autojumbles, Ebay or friendly forum member

Richard  it was the rear brake I was referring to, the one on the 61 bike in the picture with top cable and cable abutment cast into the plate was used for one year only 58-59, it also needs a torque arm of a different length to the other ( how do I know - well anybody need a torque arm for the lower cable one !!!).

im very surprised that nobody wants to make them because it is a very popular part that everybody wants
is there a place out there that if i provide loads of reference pictures they would make a one off or even a batch of them?

You'll find one, just keep checking Ebay Motors (us),
here are some references from one I just missed out on
about a year ago, I have a beautiful guard I got with
my basket case, perfect chrome etc., but someone
came up with the bright idea to cot 100mm off the
bottom!!! faily common unfortunatly,

Hi All,My `61 s/rocket has the later guards, and worryingly, also has traces of fiberglass repairs here and there, I haven`t investigated how bad they are yet......I would love a nice new set, but the most likely source, Autocycle Engineering, don`t seem to supply them.If you go onto their website, they bought out a company called Speedwell Mudguards some time ago, who made most of the mudguards for brit bikes, but the text informs that many press tools were scrapped in 1977 *sad2*, including "the deep valance presswork for Gold Flash, Norton ss and Super Rocket" *sad2* *sad2* They do seem to know all things mudguard though, and refer to a one off service if enough enquiries, perhaps we should all register an interest?/ You never know, Bob.
