Am I bent? A plunger rear end question
« on: 16.02. 2010 00:23 »
G'day to all,

I am just about to re-assemble my engine (a big thank you to Jim (Muskrat)) and noticed that the chrome slides on the plunger rear end have creased. All this in only 30min on the road!
Is there a trick to assembling these units or is the supporting frame bent?
I noticed a slight kink after shipping with a reputable carrier on one side only, now have kinks on both.

Sorry can't delete... I found the problem. There is nothing a big hammer and new paint can't fix

To the naked eye it looked straight... as we tried to pull it apart we found the right hand slider (the shaft) would not rotate as the left hand one did. when it finally came apart we found it was bent. A final check with a straight edge showed the the top cup to be slightly out on both sides, left hand side doesn't bind too much when compressed in the workshop but it obviously does on the road.
It would appear that the outer cups at the top have been bent slightly during assembly (probably to get the bent shaft to fit)

Are the chrome covers available? I have seen the shafts, springs and top and bottom cups advertised but not the chrome slider cover

Go with the stainless.
No matter how much they rub, you can just keep on polishing them and no one will ever know.
