1952 plunger flash seat
« on: 19.03. 2010 06:07 »
Hi

Finished the restoration a few days back & have been running in the engine. The only thing holding up a test ride is the SEAT
Since I do not have the original dual seat, can anyone please help me with some sketches of the metal base & overall profile of the seat.
I can procure a solo saddle, but my son has a girl friend !!!!!

Take care
Anji

What about a pillion pad?
I think the ones we buy are actually made in India.

My dad refers to them as "Flapper brackets"...he's not as old as the phrase though.
Cheers,
Iain

Not sure this is original, but here's the basic dual seat I have on a 51 plunger.
The second photo is the seat complete.
Hope this helps.

Have a look at this one currently on ebay (Aust). It may be what your son and friend may appreciate !!!

I'm informed by Leighton's that this is a BSA plunger seat base. I got this with the Fanny B and am going to recover it and put it on the Plunger Flash.

It?s a shame you are in India, as I have a nice Beige dual seat I took off a plunger A7 when I fitted a saddle and bum pad hanging up in my garage that I will now never use.
I can try taking some pictures and measurements but not until next week now.
Let me know if you still need them

Hey Gavin you are doing a good job on your bike mate but why dont you try to get the right hinge type back mudguard? It just doesnt suit to have that swingarm one. They are available new and they are expensive but it would make your bike look right. You are doing such a good job that it seems a shame to put that one on. Only my opinion not trying to be judgemental. kind regards

Stu,

Suggest you buy a whole new seat from RK, they really are top quality, I overhauled my old one, the padding was a bit ordinary, even after replacing it, the RK seat is very very comfortable and reasonably well priced.

Terry,
I might just jump in here; see recent pic of Gavin's bike, with hinged mudguard (he might be interested in parting with the later unit!).

It is hard to read, but the number plate reads "51 FLASH".

Bike goes great (pulls like a 14 year old); he is now enjoying riding it!

I thought it was "51 GOLD".

You can't say you weren't warned, they told you it would make you go blind.

What did it take you again Gav, 31 or 32 years, well done !!!!!!!!!.

Well done Josh; you saw through my trap and passed your eyesight test!

I now feel reasonably comfortable you can see the runway.

Hi  guys

Thanks a ton for the prompt replies wit photos etc. Buying one from abroad is a no no as not possible to ship here at reasonable cost. Will therefore sue the illustrations to make a base & upholster.
Youre right Iain, the solo seats are made in India by a friend of mine, but as I wrote, ,my son has a girlfriend so thats out !!!!

Thanks guys
Anji

Hi Anji,
I was talking about the little cushion seats for passengers which go behind the solo saddle.
But then again my wife informs me they aren't very comfortable. She also thinks my bike is too fast though *smile*
Cheers,
Iain

Hi Iain
Actually what I meant was that the cushion seat wouild be too far away from him to fully enjoy the pillion rider ??????
And your lady is quite right. Anybody with a backside more than 12 ins across is likely to fall off in the first 50 miles !!
How fast does your bike go?
Take care
Anji

I think the most I ever had out of it with different gearing, high compression pistons and in cafe racer guise was 94, that was 2 up with a dicky magneto though. These days it runs out of puff at about 85, I'd investigate it, but thats over the speed limit for here anyway. I think  it just feels scarey fast when you're effectively balanced on a barstool doing that speed.

Those seats do require that the girl holds on tight however.

Cheers,
Iain
