i have a 52 A10 Golden Flash that has decided to stay in top gear. I removed the outer gearbox cover and the selector mechanism looks ok. The lever that fits through the inner cover connecting to the quadrant was floppy and free to move up and down. My problem is it looks nothing like the selector in the haynes manual. picture attached. does anyone recognise this selector, if so, why would it suddlenly stop working and how do i refit it?

Here's a pic from a plunger gearbox, looks like the same, no? Check if all the springs are ok.

Yes it does look the same... what is the technique for refitting? does the gearbox have to be in a particular gear? and how do you position the selector??

also...why and how did it just stop working? The springs are good.

G'day Alistair,
                  The lever (gear selector arm) should be free but without any play (slop). The claw is spring loaded to return to central after movement. Check for chips in the claw teeth.
The box should be in neutral and the arm horizontal when replacing the inner cover. Try it with no gasket, just a smear of hylomar or silastic.
To get it back to neutral you may have to back out the cam plate plunger ( the thing sticking out the bottom of the box with a lock nut) a few turns. With the inner cover on, and a piece of pipe over the arm, push it down whilst rocking the back wheel. that should engage 3rd. Push down again to get 2nd and again (not as far) to get neutral. If that all works refit the outer cover and try with the foot lever.

This is the problem...thanks! the claw is free to flop about and is not centralising...how is the spring replaced?

Good when you find an obvious problem and not have to try a hundred different things.
The claw is pivoting on a pin with center punch marks to hold it in.
Use a small (1/16") drill to relieve the punch marks and remove the pin. The plunger and spring is behind the claw.
