Chaincase & Timing Case Screws

Well, at long last I'm almost at the "put it back together" stage after much fixing, cleaning, replacement of sundry parts in the gearbox & primary/clutch area..
As I also now have a pretty good idea about the previous owner(s) I now leave nothing to chance as at least one of them appears to have used anything at hand rather than take the trouble to get the correct part!!

Can anyone point me in the direction of a list of the number and length of each of the screws used on both the chaincase &  primary outer covers?
Although I have the correct number at least two on the timing side are too short & one or two on the primary don't look right either!!

Adrian,
if you, like myself, don't want to have Allen screws on your bike, then you will find that normal cheese head screws won't fit into the covers, as the head diameter is too large.
De Groot in the Netherlands has complete screw sets for the timing side and the primary chaincase cover, with slotted heads, correct head diameter, length and zinc plated. I think they also sell Allen screw sets if you prefer these.

I can't link the sets directly, but you can search for the order numbers:
sch.10screw (timing side set, slotted)
sch.11screw (primary set, s'arm, slotted)

I haven't seen such sets (at least with the slotted screws) elsewhere, and I think the price is okay.

Hi Markus,
Mine are  already allen screws (both sides) so I'll keep it consistent & avoid replacing the whole lot.. I agree the originals look nice as long as someone hasn't damaged them but I tend to like the allen type as they're easier to get tight evenly.

David - I can't find the Trevinoz post, do you have a keyword I can use to search for it please?

If you intend to se the allen headed set screws please fit thick washers under them or you will stuff your cases beyond economic repair.
If you can not get thick washers use 2 thin ones

No washers had been fitted & part of my problem is that some of the bolts are too short.. The cases are fine but maybe that's lucky? I presume your concern is that the lip on the allen bolts are not as wide as the original cheese head screws?

The main problem is that it is quite easy to overtighten an allen bolt using a ratchet, something that will never happen with a slotted head and a screwdriver.

Hate to sound like a 'rivet counter' here, which I'm not, but I prefer to see slotted screw heads instead of hex socket screws on the engine casings as they were originally built and also this reduces the likelihood of damaging the casing threads by over tightening with the hex socket key. Take care or you'll be phoning the Helicoil suppliers. Barleycorn can supply them in stainless.

I only ever use allen keys, never a bar or ratchet, & use gentle finger pressure. I may try & find some small washers to spread the load though..
