toolbox fastener removal

Is it possible to remove the toolbox fastener so that the box can be painted as it seems to me that it will be difficult to get a good finish behind it. What have others done?

mine was held in place by some sort of shrunk on washer, had to cut through it. I refitted it with a bit of rubber pipe holding it in place.

Yep, like Tombeau, I used the Dremel to get the washer off and then replaced it with a tight fitting rubber washer to hold it in place. It works fine. Actually I also fitted a nylon washer on the outside under the dzus fastener head to avoid scratching the new paint as time goes by. I recommend that mod.

PS just remembered, I also have a wire from the inner tool box casing to the dzus fastener to restrict the lid from opening too far and damaging the hinge etc.

There is no washer attached to the inside of the fastener, there is a washer firmly attached to the inside of the lid. Is this the one you mean or is mine different? It looks like it could unscrew but it's very tight and I'm wary of breaking it.

Mark, someone needs to post a photo for you. Maybe the washer you see has been stuck in place with paint?  I've only got 'after the mod' photos. See attached.

           It is an aluminium collar which was most likely crimped in place at the factory.
You will have to destroy it to remove the Dzus fastener.
When I replace mine, I fit a nylon washer under the head and force a smaller diameter one over the shank to retain it.
