how long is the back wheel spacer

Hi,could anyone please measure the overall length of the back wheel spacer, part number 67-6066 of your A10, because the badly sawn off gas pipe which was 'fitted' on my A10 needs replacing.  Bob is offering to make me a spacer in stainless but we've been unable to find the overall length that it needs making to.

oh sorry i can't help then , i have both the ariel and iron ones from a swingarm frame .

Hi

Mine measures 29.3 long, 30.22 dia for most of the length and 38.5 for the 'flange' end for about 4mm which goes against the plunger arm. This was measured with a metric vernier caliper. This is from a 1955 A10 plunger frame with QD hub.

just goes to show that you really need the measurements, the bit of stainless Bob had in mind won't accommodate the flange so I'll just have to wait a bit longer until he's got a suitable bit of stainless again.  I've filed away the sizes.

Aluminum alloy works just fine for this application, Anita.

Personally I'd be reluctant to use aluminium alloy. The spacer will be in compression and just possibly, as it's softer than the original steel, could allow the spindle to loosen itself.

But my metallurgy was done a long time ago and I may well be wrong.

I made up and installed an alloy spacer nine years ago for my A10 and it's worked just fine.
I would not have recommended it otherewise.

There is a satisfaction in manufacturing compnents, either of the two materials will be suitable for this application and are both superior to using Gas pipe. As it has been mentioned the length depends on which hub and brake plate is fitted. Later version spacer as fitted to SW arm models are listed on ebay . Based on experince these are guarenteed not to fit. Good luck and hpoe the gas pipe holds out until you source your stainless. If you are stuck drop me a PM and i can send you a billet of SS.
