Damage to Cases
« on: 11.09. 2010 08:33 »
Hi All

Cups of tea all round, I have receintly purchased a BSA A10 basket case, it has some nasty damage to the cases.
Being three of the four bolts that hold the scavenge cover (67-1285) have been broken off. *sad2*
The cases have been welded (badly) and now need to be milled back flat.
Any advise on who to take it to ?? I live in London, but travel is no problem.
Failing that I am looking for case for a 1957 ??

Im doing the same job on my plunger cases at the momment.  In theory there should be plenty of machine shops up and down the country that can do this type of work but finding one that can be bothered is not always easy. I can do yours if you get stuck but im in Lincolnshire.

My opinion, this can be fixed, but before starting on the repair also check all mating flanges etc for damages & misalignement (oil leaks, quick wear) and see that you've got matching cases (look for the same stamped number on both halves). If in doubt, look for a good & complete crankcase, may save you from lots of hassle in the future.

Why not bolt it together, get a good file and file it flat, sit the sumpplate on or bolt it on with the good bolt, mark the holes drill and tap them, a tap would only cost a few $ . The sump plate doesn't have to be perfect, just flat so it seals.  The top where the cyl bolts on needs to be square to the crank as well as flat and can also be done pretty easily with a file,  an unmatched set of cases can have the cyls tilted to one side, you need to check it and even it up if necessary.

The case needs to be well de-oiled before welding. A hot soak in boiling Oakite for a day or so should render it weldable.

Hi A10GF,
This reminds me of something I meant to check on mine.. Whereabouts on the casing are the number stamped please?  I've looked for mine & haven't found them yet (1961/2 GF), maybe under the front mounting brackets?

Thanks,

Adrian
