Gear box problem

My gear box works perfectly with one exception. Often it will not select first gear when I change down. If I lift the pedal up with my foot and try again first gear will then engage. No problem going up from first to second. Anyone got any ideas?

I don't know if you're kidding or have a rear-set pedal and associated quadrant, othewise, I'd say you weren't riding an A10. Did I figure out the riddle?

It's rear set foot rests so the selection sequence is reversed.

I had a similar problem after a gearbox re build. It was due to the flange on the new selector bush being very slighly too thick which  caused a slight bind and so the selector mechanism did not always go to the mid position, if I touched the gear lever with my foot just before changing gear it worked, because obviously it ensured that the selector was completely in the mid position. So I would look at the selector mechanism and make sure it's free and always returns to the mid position. Have a look at the stop plate return spring and selector plate. Make sure the spring isnt stretched or binding on the selector spindle. You only have to remove the outer cover to get at thess parts.   All the best.

G'day John,
                   after checking Goldy's suggestions and also the cam plate detent spring and plunger, you still have the problem. I'd look at the selector forks.
I had a similar problem that started that way and over time got worse (mine was 3rd and 4th). Eventually tracked it to a bent fork, by swapping them over and moved the problem to 1st and 2nd.
