Late A10 Brake Plates
« on: 10.10. 2010 18:51 »
Dear All,
Following my recent disaster dropping the rear brake plate of my A10 I ALMOST managed to straighten mine.. You know, almost there, almost there, SNAP.... b*gg*r.....

So, as it was the Shepton Jumble yesterday I went hunting.. There was one not quite as bad as mine which had the right number (42-6357) which was overpriced and a much better but slightly different one.. As it had virtually new unused shoes & looked good I took the chance & bought it..

Now I'm home of course I start to see small differences between the two.. I knew the number wasn't right but it looked so similar apart from a cast ring around the inside about 1/2" from the edge..

My question is : does anyone know the difference between part nos :  42-6357 and 42-6351 ??

Also my original plate had a flat brake arm (which didn't line up well with the cable stop lug) whereas the new one (42-6351) has a cranked arm.
If I use the cranked arm I guess the tip should end up farthest from the plate (it wasn't fitted that way, didn't line up well but was loose so may have been a quick assembly error, reversed it's fine).

The only thing I've noticed is that the shoes on the new one are about 1/16 narrower but the plate appears to fit the hub ok..

Any ideas please??

Thanks,

Adrian

Looks like there's no easy answer here?

Can anyone help with the rear brake arm? On a 1961 Flash should it be flat or cranked in shape please??

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

If you mean the brake operating arm that the cable goes onto (part number 42-6353), I reckon that there is a slight crank in it and it is fitted with the crank going towards the brakeplate.

Castings need to be reshaped either hot or very fast.
Very fast = dropping the bike & bending the levers
Repair + heating it for at least 1 hour @ 400 DegC then straightening it as quick as possible wile still hot.

Thanks Beezageeza,
The one I bought had the crank towards the plate, it's just that it lines up with the cable stop better the other way! I guess I'd better leave it as it's supppose to be....

The shoes on it have metal plates on one end that the previous owner has fitted at the cam end. Having seen a photo in the Bacon Twin book of "1962" ones I think this is incorrect & these should be on the pivot so I'll try that.

Thanks BSA_54A10, I'll remember that if I make the same error again (hopefully not!). In the event I think buying another is better than risking the wife's displeasure and burning my hands while trying to bend it back... This time I'm afraid I learned that the reshaping cold bit only works once... *sad2*

Cheers,
Adrian

Adrian,
As you have found, the lever lines up better with the crank outwards.
That is how I fitted mine.

Hi Trev,
Thanks for that - in that case I'll fit mine that way round too, makes sense...
