Hi All. For my late Star-Twin project  (2tone green/headlight nacelle etc) I need a fuel tank, this is the type with the large (4"?) round plastic badges as the later Shooting-Stars. I have never seen one in the flesh, so to speak ,therefore I am not certain if the tank has recesses for the badge fitting (like the later swinging arm tanks) or whether they are just screwed onto the chrome surface of the side panel. If any one could enlighten me or even better if somebody has a spare that is surplus and would be prepared to sell, please drop me a line. Regards, Peter

Hi.
I'm midway through the rebuild of a 1953 Star Twin. Although rough when I got it,  it was complete. I have inserted a photo of it in the 'before' refurbishment phase. As you can see the later tank has the rather more traditional paint/chrome layout. The tank does not have recesses for the badges. Mine came with the BSA Star with the black background which I have been informed is correct for the year. I have seen others with the dark green background to match the dark green colour of the frame etc. Not entirely sure what is the correct colour for the  badges. Hope this helps.

regards

Simon

Clearly some variation dependant on year. The below image is of a 1954 model from Sammy Miller's Museum. I note that this one has the dark green badge! Whatever the case, they are all lovely machines!

It came out with green badges.
When BSA was sold to Manganeese Bronze, Moto plas ,the company that made the tank badges was sold off to another plastic moulding company.
They steadfastly refused to make badges in any colour other than black or red and even worse refused to sell unpainted badges so owners could paint them correctly.
Black or red with gold stars were standard colours and stocked by a lot of dealers, the other finishes like silver stars or green backgrounds were not stocked so there were not many of them around and a lot of owners would fit the wrong ones now if their originals were lost, damaged or stolen rather than order the correct ones.
Some pre production bikes were fitted with the black badges as you get period publications some with black & some with green.
On nearly every new model BSA fitted badges finished in the tank colours.
the pear BSA badge cane in ivory, blue ( light & dark ) red, green, & black.
Same think with the cast badges.
The new model had them painted to match the tank.
Subsequent years got the generic colour.

Maybe the way the light is on the badge - they are green. When I researched during the rebuild the original badges were same as in the photos above. Agree - lovely machines.

Re: A7 Star-Twin optinal carb?

Hi All.  Whilst we are on a Star-Twin appreciation trail, I would like to pose another question.  My Father had a 1952 A7 Star-Twin (AA7S engine) in his youth, he didn't buy it new but it wasn't very old at the time. It would out perform all the local A10's because, if his memory is correct, it had a better carb fitted (from new) Now, I think I have read somewhere that a 10TT9 carb was an optional extra on a Star-Twin. Can anyone out there in BSA land confirm this?  perhaps from original sales blurb or price lists. I would be interested to find out. Regards, Peter

The parts book doesnt list anything for 52' but I just dug out the Amal settings and parts list for 52' and the Star Twin was available with a T10 TT9 carby.

This was a 1 1/16" carby whereas the standard 276 was 1". I've added a scan from the amal parts list. They cost 10 Quid at the time, probably a little more expensive now !
