Removing Rear Wheel Cover
« on: 07.11. 2010 20:14 »
I want to remove the rear wheel bearing cover (QD type hub as below) and before I attempt this I wondered if anyone has done it and can advise please. After a quick probe it seems pretty tight and I fear damaging it.

Hi there,

Mine just prised off in the end with a screwdriver, it did seem stuck fast and I was worried about bending it up, but with a bit of gentle levering it eventually popped off. I cleaned it up and now it is a nice push fit and comes off without too much effot

Sorry to resurrect this one but I'm having trouble removing my so-called QD rear wheel. I have to confess it's not on the A10 (that has full width iron hubs) but on the 1954 B33..
The wheel does not separate from the drum so the whole lot has had to come out. The rubber washer was perished & stuck and I've removed that with a hook made from an old coat hanger (took ages...).
It still is stuck so I looked at the other end & saw that the cap has rivets. Is this standard or has someone helpfully modified the cap?

I can get the hub to move very slightly on the spline in the direction of wheel rotation but not a bit in the direction of the splines...

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Adrian

Adrian,
I would say that someone in the past has riveted the cover to the inner flange because the spot welds had broken.
You have to prise the cover off as previously stated by others. It may be very tight because of corrosion or paint.
With the wheel out, a hammer and a block of wood should get the drum off.

Hi Trev,
That's very helpful many thanks.. I just wanted to be sure before offering it a little "friendly persuasion" !!

Cheers,

Hi Duncan & Trev...
Just how much force did you need to lever the cover off? Mine is stuck firm and I'm having to lever against the spokes which I'm not comfortable with.. It bends well but so far has not "popped off" .

As for the other end so far my attempts to get the drum off have resulted in a broken piece of wood!! How long are the splines?? I think the remains of the rubber seal have seeped into the splines so it's also well stuck.. Can't think of any other way though..

Any advice appreciated..
Thanks,
Adrian

Adrian,
It may be time to get the blue tongue out. [Gas torch]
The hub cover can be rusted on, I have nearly destroyed them getting them off.
When you get the drum off you could try driving the axle towards the cover and hopefully everything will come free.

Thanks Trev,
I've had another go using more force but with no success so I'll see if I can find the trusty blowlamp - it's been a while since I've had to use it!!  I'll try heating the drum from the inside and see what happens..
Cheers,
