Tool box and Oil Tank mounting
« on: 12.11. 2010 06:21 »
Anyone help with 1- The size of the bolts 29 4329 and 29 5289 for the top mounts of oil tank and toolbox and
2- the dimensions of the distance tube 42 8339 and where it actually goes.
This is for 55 road rocket.
Regards to all

Hi Mark, not sure of any dimensions but  i think 42-8339 fits inside the top shock absorber brackets on the frame, in front of the shock top bolt, and your oiltank/toolbox bolt passes through it-it stops the frame bracket squashing when the bolt is tightened. HTH, Bob.

Mark,
Go back 4 or 5 posts and look at the "thread size" post.
Find the link to the Stainlessbits list . download it, print it off and keep a copy in the workshop.
Nearly every BSA / Triumph nut & bolt. thread type, diameter, length (sometimes finish) and use.
Just remember that BSA used the same bolts for hundreds of different places so don't worry if your tool box bolts are listed as handle bar bolts because that was where they were used first

thanks guys, got the sizes from the link and printed it for future reference. It looks to me that I could almost get away without the spacer tube. With the top of the shock in position it looks like it would be difficult to squash the bracket. What do others think?

I think to not put one in would just be laziness, for what it is worth tucked up in there it is not really seen, so it does not have to be factory correct part. You can easily make a spacer to fit.

Put the spacer in and do as you're told.....hee....hee. Seriously though, it will collapse the bracket otherwise and will show up in the reflections in the paint. I had to put a screw and nut inside mine to bend the bracket back out from the inside and then put the spacer in.

I stand humbled in the face of such well meant advice and will immediately sentence myself to a session in the shed to manufacture items in question.

Mark,
Search in "Stories and Chat" under the subject "Bolts" and you will find a list of fasteners etc.
As stated by others, the spacer goes into the frame ears and is a pain to fit but necessary
To mount the oil tank, you need two other spacers, 42-8331.
One goes through the rubbers and cups on the top mount and the second goes on the toggle bolt.Dimensions are in the list.
