rear mudguard a10

Help
Can anyone help with the differences between a pre 1958 and a 1962 A10 rear mudguard because I'm having trouble identifying them, I have one fitted and I dont know what its off but it isn't an A10 so if I fit another one I'd prefer it to be in keeping with the year if possible. A photo would be real helpful 'cos I'm not very bright. *help*
Cheers

I dont know much about mudguards, but if you want to keep your toys i would re-arrange the order of that list at the bottom before her indoors sees it!!! Bob

You are dead right Bob, everyone knows a 1953 model comes before a 1963.

Hi
Many thanks for info Nick, I notice that the valance isn't as deep on those pictures as the earlier one (pre 59?), I'll keep looking for now.
Cheers

Hi Cliff
Sorry I got your name wrong, keep an eye on Ebay there has a few mudguards for sale at the moment.

What I did not mention that the 2 holes close together in the side of the mudguard is 58/60 onwards one picks up the seat L shaped bracket and the other the main side bracket (arrow head).

Earlyer mudguards will have 2 holes in the top to pick up the seat bracket.

Can send photo if required.

Many thanks Nick, I have a 'slim' pre 58 rear on mine then after perusing the excellent scans, I don't know whether to replace it or to repair and refit it, hmmm so much to do and so little time... *sarcastic*

Cliff,
            What is a "slim" guard?

Hi Trev.
It doesn't have the deep valances on and it looks like it's been made to fit the A10, it uses the pre 58 bracket across the top and the number plate sits well with it,  it is a "slim" version  *smile* I shall post a piccy when I have it back together.

Good day all!

I note one of the other people posting on this subject has used a photo from my eBay sale item:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320627178918&ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT

stating it?s a photo of ?pre-1958 mudguard?. However, I understood that for the 1960 season stock A10 and A7 models, the rear mudguard was revised with new ?arrowhead? stays and so did not need any indent around the outer beading  to clear the earlier type of flat ended rear brackets.

If my mudguard is pre-1958 (sic) mudguard could someone explain the complete lack of indent in the beading for the earlier type of rear brackets. I can also tell you that it fits straight onto the 1960 style 'arrowhead stays' and the rear shock mounting bolts go straight through the mudguard. So it seems highly likely that it is for the 1960 models.

I don?t know exactly what bike this mudguard came off as I bought it loose and it seemed more honest not to attribute it to a particular model.

At some time in the future I'd like to expand on the great A/B group mudguard saga but i'll have to wait until I can post photos.

Best wishes

There are a few different rear guards for the swinging arm A10.
The first is the long front type fitted to the 1954 models. There are 2 variants of this one, the long tail and the short tail.
The next was fitted from 1955 to 1959.
The U.S. Super Rocket had a "sprint" guard in 1959.
The last type was introduced in 1960 with the arrow head stays and seat brackets on the side. This one was also made in a short tail version for the U.S. market.
There may be others but I don't know of them.
Trev.

Hi Blackcat-I too am scratching my head identifying rear A10 mudguards.Your  picture of the guard for sale looks to me to be the same pressing as the rear guard on my A10,(a  more rounded profile with a small flare on the rear tip)- but i am convinced now that mine is an  EARLY A65 job. There is one on E-bay now described as A65 lightning and its identical to mine. It is recessed on both sides at the front, obviously for the chainguard on the nearside, but also on the offside?, i believe A10 guards are not recessed on the offside. I wonder if some late A10`s had the more rounded type fitted as production of the A50/65 started, and BSA began to run out of the earlier mudguards??
