Dear All

I think even Mick Walker got his data confused as in his book (see scan of page 125 for Humble Pie) he starts with a A10GE and ends with a A10GF(?). My moneys on GE for generator. I see the distributor is different from a pre-unit Triumph 6T or 5T, anybody know which model?

Were all the police and other earlier alternators magneto powered as I never heard of coil powered A10s before this week. I wonder how many got built and if there was an A7 variant?

Martin

Hi!

Not exactly about A10?s fitted with distributors but two threads I found on BritBike Forum which may be useful to those interested in A10?s with alternators. This is a beautiful 1962 Gold Flash with alternator and magneto from the US:

http://www.britbike.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=24003&Number=212689#Post212689

This apparently started life as a police bike in Indonesia. The post also mentions the alternator version was devised for the "Black Flash" Police model, requiring extra electrical output for a flashing blue light and a radio although there were civilian versions available that had alternators.

There are some A10 alternator outer chaincases around (Yeoman?s had some when I asked recently) but the rears are unobtainable, mainly I think because nobody can identify them except by part number as they look identical to ordinary A10 rear chaincases until you compare them closely. The front of the alternator rear chaincase is slightly more bulbous and the screw spacings are different to the standard A10.

You can use a B31 alternator rear chaincase instead but it needs the crankcase/chaincase junction machining (no, I haven?t done this yet but it looks perfectly possible) and the some of the front screw holes welding up then taping again but it is the right shape to look identical to the real thing when it?s on the bike. When I do it I?ll post photos.

Other people have used Matchless alternator chaincases but again these need machining and welding and you couldn?t pretend you had an original alternator A10 after doing all the work, see this post:

Best wishes

Martin
