Piston Rings
« on: 10.01. 2011 15:06 »
I recently tracked down some hepolite piston rings for my 1958 BSA Super Rocket re-build
The box states
ORIGINAL HEPOLITE RINGS
1950/7 650cc OHV 10 Road Rocket / Golden Flash
70 mm / 2.7559" +060" (I required +060")
R3650 K

However, it has a WARNING printed on the side stating
These Chromium PLated Rings must not be fitted to chromium plated bores

I had been under the impression all barrels are chromium plated, so do I have a problem here?

Haven't heard that one. definitely some barrels ( not A10 I don't think) are chromed and some rings also and the way I heard it was two should never meet.
If I remember correctly (not guaranteed) ideally you want a hard and a soft metal rubbing together for less wear
All the best - Bill
1961 Flash - stock, reliable, steady, fantastic for shopping
1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco

Hi chaps!

The bores of the A7/A10 engines definitely are NOT chrome plated, it's just good old grey cast iron, bored, honed and that's it.

Cheers, Markus

Just choosing an old "Piston Rings" topic for this bit of interest.

I bougt these +40 '50-'52 A7 rings a couple of years ago at the large Chief Blackhawk Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet in Iowa. It was one of those "last item in the last box searched." Probably paid half of what they were worth. Of course my A7 is  '57. Funny they didn't think to include " '57" when they made them in '52. Anyway, it's time to use them and I'm a little sad that I have to break into the wax paper packaging and lose this bit of history. Barring anyone here saying "Stop, those are priceless!" that's what I'm going to do.

G'day Richard.
Yes I hate having to open original packing like that but comes a time when the bits are needed.
Keep the wrapping and put the old rings in and hang on the wall (put a groove or two in the rings so they can't be used).
Cheers

That's a nice set of wellworthy milemaster rings, some of the best in their day!
My grandfather worked in the machine shop at the lymington factory in the early fifties, and my mum worked in the despatch office, so she probably logged those in the despatch records back then.
I also worked for the firm in the early eighties just before they all closed down. All the factory sites are now all housing or industrial estates *sad2*
