A7/10 Rigid?Plunger Paint/chrome scheme?
« on: 14.01. 2011 16:21 »
Hi,
I'm at the point of getting my tank chromed for my A7/10 plunger cicra 53 (which I think is originally off a rigid?).
Trouble is I need a template at allow the chromers to only polish the right areas (none painted areas).
Does any one have a rigid tank in the same scheme as in the pics below and if so any chance of some measurements or even better a template? My tank didn't have any chrome on it just lots of paint and 3lbs of lead and is now naked and full size!

Also what colour is 'red' in the pics??
Oh - apologies if its any forums members bike I've 'borrowed' the pics from ;)

Thanks

I have a tank that looks fairly original, though I'm sure it HAS been repainted at some point.  I can take some measurements this weekend.  Any dimensions in particular you're looking for?

That said, my painter doesn't have any problems with the painted areas being polished.  He says he uses and etching primer that forms a good bond on chrome.

Go to  www.rsbikepaint.com  enter in the make and year of your bike and it will show the original colour. The red on the tank in the photo is Devon Red.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the offer - I guess the main measurements would be as in the two photo below if it's not too much trouble, this should give me a fairly good indication of the scheme. Also would you mind posting who you you use for your paint jobs (or send me a PM)? I havn't found anyone yet but the chromers I intend to do but haven't told me yet!

And thanks Howard - will have a glegg at RS paint.  *smiley4*

Many thanks guys

No prob.  It'll be Monday by the time I get to that but I can definitely get you those measurements.  I'm in the US and shipping tanks is REALLY pricey so I consider myself very fortunate to know a painter who specializes in british motorcycles and is a BSA buff himself (aside from being very talented).  His name is Don Roe <roe_d (at ) bellsouth.net> in case anyone else wants to contact him ( doubt you'd want to ship your tank).

Cheers.

Hi RoadRunner
Originally the whole sides of the tanks were polished !!!
It would be WAY TOO difficult just to polish small areas
As already stated Etch primer will stick to chrome!!

Thanks for the advice/info Alex and JOhn O R,
Look forward to getting the measurements and guess I'll need to talk with possible paint shops re-chroming and etch primer. If anyone has a good paint shop near the midlands (UK) they can recommend that would be helpful - its just knowing who to trust as usual! *eek*

Cheers

RoadRunner,
The paint pattern you show was used until 1952.
From 1953 the pattern was changed to that which was used until 1963.

OK, here it is.  While this tank has two extra coats of paint on it, I can still see the original paint and lining in places, so I think it's right:

Your measurements:
1. 4-1/8"
2. 2"
3. 1-1/2"
4. 7/8"
5. 2-3/8"
6. 1-5/8"
7. 2-5/8"
8. 1"
9. 3-3/8"
10. 1-1/4"  (to edge of tank just below the bracket)
11. 4-1/8"

1, 2, and 6 are along a line from the filler cap bung to the center of the badge.

Anyway, hope that helps.

-cheers.

Hi Roadrunner,

I've got templates for the side panels for a 1954 Plunger B31/33 tank.  It looks similar to that shown in beezalex's pictures but with round badges.  The templates have reference points and measurements to show how they line up with the knee grip holes.

Maybe you could utilise both sets of information and end up with what you are looking for.

If you can make use of them PM your address and I'll post them to you.

Beezageezauk.

Thanks guys!

Although the bike/engine are of 1955/6 I like the scheme of the 1952 style so that what I'm going for (Thanks for the info Trevinoz).

Beezalex - many thanks for taking the time to record all the different measurements; these will be really helpful to myself and maybe to other members in future. Combined with the templates from Beezageezauk I should be fine. *smile*

Once chromed and painted I'll post some pics - its getting closer to starting. Just wants oil in and tank on and electrics to finish (plus the usual odds jobs). Roll on the spring!!

Many thanks,
RoadRunner

You're most welcome.  This is something I needed to do anyway since I'm about to send the tank away to get an alloy replica made for my A7 racer, so it was good timing.

Cheers.
