Lucas 564 tail light assembly
« on: 25.09. 2017 10:10 »
Over time I have built up quite a collection of Lucas 564 tail lamps due to the fact that sooner or later the captive threaded brass lens retaining screw ferrule pulls out of the back plate. It is held in place by being peened or maybe riveted to the back plate the peened part being very thin and fragile. Has anyone devised a way of repairing them when this happens? the back plate is made from stainless steel so I would imagine that soldering is not an option but maybe araldite would do it. pattern 564 units are pleniful and cheap to buy, but it is a nuisance when this happens because I am unable to ride the bike for a couple of days until a replacment arrives. It does not seem to make any difference as to how careful I am about not screwing the retaining screw to tight eventually the ferrule pulls off. I have 3 tail lights where this has happened and if I could make them serviceable again obviously I would be spared having to wait for a replacement to turn up.

This is a new old stock one. The studs are fixed in squared holes and cannot pull through due to the shape of the end on back of the unit.

Could you adapt your fitting in a similar way?

Nuts with the sleeve are available: https://goo.gl/jDrkJL

Should be easy enough to modify the backplate to have the stud arrangement.

I can advise that this is a particularly weak area on some Chinese sourced copies.

Thanks chaps looks like I can repair my u/s  ones then. Julian I can see why I have had so many failures. Clearly the ones that I have are not the real thing.

Aint that the truth - mind you its not always clear which ones are the real thing, in fact is the real thing still available?

This E bay item looks like the original Lucas type;

Thank you. I've just bought one for my bike. I'll need to remove the bulb holder and fit my LED array but the lens fixing is superior to the one I have at the moment.

Julian thanks for that, I shall order one for my bike. That is a far superior product.

I think you will find that the new genuine Lucas ones have metric threads.
