Collected my rebuilt engine today
« on: 02.02. 2011 18:26 »
Collected my engine today, along with a box full of scrap that came out of it.

Included in the box of scrap was:

pair of conrods, one had been welded up and they had spacers made up to enable the large journal rods to fit the small journal crank. The shells fitted had no oil holes in them!

A clapped out crankshaft and timing bush.

Pair of pistons which prob came out of an Indian car with handcut  skirts to clear the crank webbing.

Mashed up wormdrive and gear from the oil pump.

Some wierd spring that was in place of the cork ring on the breather.

Various bits of broken metal found in the sump.

The chap who rebuilt it was surprised it lasted as long as it did without exploding.
So now I should have a half decent engine, Crank was reground all -20, new shells and timing bush line bored and new driveside bearing, also shimmed to correct endfloat New +20 JP pistons and rings. Cases were vapour blasted (came up nice) Really good job on 2 broken cylinder fins (cylinders shotblasted and repainted) Several threads repaired. New oilpump gears.

Just got to put it back in the frame and fit the head and rockerbox. Looking forward to getting it running, I think I should notice a marked improvement!

Cheers
Duncan

G'day Duncan,
Crikey, I'd chop the PO's hands off to stop him killing another motor. But then he probably used his feet anyway.
And I was worried about a tiny piece of plastic in the sump (plastic cage DS main bearing).
The noise that motor would have been making  *eek*, you will need to let the clutch out to see if your new motor is running !!! *smile*
Cheers

You have to admire the thought that went into getting the motor running with those parts! In all fairness it didn't run too bad, easy to start and idled fine - just a bit rough above 50 MPH (now I know why!)

My engine builder could not ID the crank - there is a number stamped on the botom of the flywheel RE7243 anyone know what that relates to.

Hi Muskrat,

It's a long way back to New Delhi - in all fairness I didn't pay a lot for the bike and I had a lot of fun with it whilst in India and the dealer fixed everything and serviced it for nothing over a 3 year period, it always got me home and never left me stranded.

cheers

Hi Andy,

Is that the Vinod Sharma ? I need to have a word with him about his quality control! Only joking, I knew what I was buying into, I would have been upset if I paid top dollar for it. For what I paid for it you would only get a box of rusty bits over here. I consider it as a running restoration!
