Hi KiwiGF, just been out to the garage for a measure of mine (`61 Ga7 frame but I don`t think they ever changed in this respect, here`s what i got with a digi. caliper:

Overall length 1.755" (thus 1 3/4"  without paint!)
outer dia: 0.745" (3/4")
bore: 0.378", (clears a 3/8" pin).
The tube is drilled and tapped to take a 1/4" grubscrew mid way with the screw hole pointing toward the handlebars, (roughly). Not sure of thread maybe Cycle. This grubscrew retains the 3/8" pin that passes through which  has a corresponding flat milled in it ,pin (42-9060) is  readily available in stainless, or measures 2 1/2" long if  you want to make it, HTH, Bob.

Looking at your photo tells me perhaps they did change a bit- mine is just a plain length of tube with no cutaway section like yours, the threaded hole is on the front side of mine.I believe the tube was originally intended as a pivot tube for the front of the old style single saddles (no grubscrew), allowing movement for the saddle springs at the rear.Bob

I had a look at my frames and out of six, only one is cut away as per the photo and that is the 1954 frame.

Those dimensions were exactly what I needed and the pic really helps as well I think I'll make one without the cutaway as that's easier and as quite a few frames are like that it's a good chance it's right for mine

I might as well make pin as well so thanks for info on that as well

Is the cutaway to reduce weight ?

3/4 o.d is more than I would guessed so I'm glad I asked

You guys are great!

This weekend I'm going to attempt fix the oval headstock wish me luck it's not going to be easy

Glad to help-what the forum`s for.Your`e right about the O/D- this is actually quite a "chunky" piece of tube, until i measured it, i would never have considered it to be so substantial. One thing to watch for-when you weld it to the frame, watch out for distortion that would trap the pin.May be better to drill the bore slightly undersize and ream out once welding is done? Best of Luck, Bob.
