Early A7 Airbox / Battery Carrier
« on: 09.03. 2011 07:30 »
I bought an early A7 long stroke airbox / battery carrier last year that I thought had been cut as the air filter insert did not fit properly. The picture in my 1948 parts book shows an insert with 4 connections as per the right one in the picture. I then found another one last weekend at an autojumble where the main airbox was the same shape as my first one but the insert fitted correctly (the left one in the picture). Both are the early airbox with the hole for the carb rubber directly behind the carb and not the later one where the rubber is an L shape. I was wondering if there was a different airbox / battery carrier for the rigid and plunger A7 in 1949 ? Thanks, John

Thanks to Terryk who has cleared up my confusion. He has informed me that the airbox for the long stroke A7's were the same for the rigid and plunger models. The difference I have found is that at some time in 1949 they changed the shape of the airbox and added a cutaway at the rear facing side to allow better airflow. So it seems I have 2 of the later long stroke airboxs / battery carriers but one of the inserts is for an earlier box and the other is the correct one. The earlier one does fit, it just has an extra spare tab that sticks out at rear facing side of the box which can be ignored.

Thanks again Terry
