QD rear hub issues. Help needed.
« on: 13.03. 2011 17:17 »
Hi All. As the rebuild on my 1952 A7ST progresses, the rear hub is causing some confusion. It doesn't seem to match the illustrations shown in the parts book or even other QD hubs that I have seen. There is only a bearing retaining nut in one side and there is no thread in the other side of the hub. The bearing that side, appears to be a tight driven fit ending flush with the end face of the hub. There is a bearing spacer between that looks to be a correct part that stops the bearing being driven in any further. I wonder if this is a very early QD hub that was fitted 1947/48 when the front and rear wheels were interchangeable, can any of our knowledgeable forum users confirm this or provide any further info. Thanks in advance. Peter

Peter,
It could be a rigid or '54/5 swinging arm hub.

Hi Peter,

Does it look like this? This is a spare hub I've had for some time and like you I've no idea what it's off - certainly not the same as my plunger hub. Thought some photos might help?

Look forward to someone identifying it (hopefully) *smiley4*

Cheers

RR,
Are the crinkle flanges the same size on both sides?
That hub looks like '54/55 SA or rigid.

Hi Trev,
The hub is equal size on both sides - 4 1/8" at the widest parts.

Cheers

Hi Roadrunner.
Thanks for the reply and yes, my hub is exactly the same as your one in the photos, if we can find out what they fit, we may be able to 'corner the market' with our vast stock of 2!  With further investigation I believe that they probably are for the early 47/48 models where the front and rear wheels were interchangeable. The parts manual only lists I bearing retaining nut for each hub, so that could be it but it is a bit of guess. The single thread in one end only, is not the same as the 54/55 swinging arm as suggested.  Hopefully someone will know for sure.  Regards, Peter

Peter,
I think that you will find that the interchangeable wheel hubs from the first A7s have a smaller crinkle flange on the cover side.
The ridgid hubs from, I think, 1949 have the same size flanges. The same hub is used for 1954/5 swinging arm bikes, Goldies, RGS but with larger rivets, and even some A50/65s.
RR's hub appears to be maroon so I would say it is from a 1954/5 SA B31/33.
The SA hub only has a threaded bearing retainer in the spline end whereas the plunger hub has a retainer both ends.
   Trev.

well from the pics, they look identical to the two I just assembled an hour or so ago for the '47 Rigid A7... Will try take a pic of the parts manual to verify if for you.

Hi trevinoz. It seems that you could be correct, I have rechecked the BSA parts listing for 1954/55 Swinging arm A7/A10 and they do seem to have just the one bearing retaining nut on the spline side of the hub. This appears to be the same for Gold Stars, so that seems to answer the question, but, my early A7SS project that I checked, now seems to have a plunger hub fitted (with 2 bearing retaining nuts) so I can swop the hubs over. This leads me onto another question. The flush rivets in the swinging arm hub are just showing signs of being loose, so does anybody know of a method/source of rivets to rectify this without resorting to the cost of an SRM exchange hub? any info greatfully received. Regards, Peter
