roller starter

Hello everyone
                            I'm just manufacturing a roller starter for my A10 ,and I need some advice on what engine to fit to the starter ,I've already tried an electric lawn mower engine but that was too weak,therefor any advice would be gratefully received .

                              The reason I need this starter is because of my age (77)and I'm not so strong these days,I'm having difficulty in kick starting her .

Usually the go is to make them long and power them with the drive wheels of you car.
Lawn mower engines are generally weak so that they will not cut all of your foot off in one hit.
Any old car starter motor will work well but a geared down diesel engine starter will work even better.
Power it from your car with jumper leads.
And use the gear box & start the bike in 3rd or 4th which will give the starter a lot more leverage.

Another option is to use the electric starter from Steve McFarlane - previous owner of SRM http://www.startyourbsa.co.uk/index.html
The roller starter is a good idea but what happens if you need to start her away from home or you stall on the road. The electric start is not cheap but what price can you put on continuing to ride your A10. It will also add value to the bike if you eventually decide to sell - there are probably many others out there in the same situation as you who have given up riding A10s because of starting problems.

what about 2 starter motors in sincro,one on each roller.just got to work out the ratio of what the roller turns at compared to wheel revolutions.

I've seen Steve Macs starter A10 it works really well. Also, have you considered fitting low comp pistons, from memory the dished ones were only about 6.5:1. Also an older friend of mine found his A10 too heavy to move around, he changed it for a C15 and loves it. It extended his motorcycling hobby by a good few years.

I suppose you could fit a sidecar and carry the starter around in it, but then you would need help to lift it in and out!!

Great to here that you are still riding, know very little about starting rollers but seems to be 2 person set up, helped rescue a guy at Donnington race track few years ago got into a terrible muddle trying to start up on his own.

The Steve McFarlane option would be my choice and it would add value to your bike, meet him a few times and what I nice guy, hoping one day he will take on engine rebuilds, but seems to be very busy with the starters.

Hi Everyone
                  Thank you for your replies I rather like the Idea of a starter incorporated in the bike ,Like the Steve Mcfarlane  Idea ,so I have e-mailed Steve for more information ,and I've just had a reply which said I'm sorry but the starter only fit a swinging arm A10 and not an A10 Plunger which my bike is ,so that lets me out and it's back to the roller starter .

A single starter motor and car battery will always start your bike.

Shipping might not be cheap, but with the current exchange rate, it you might not be in too bad of a shape.

The Hawksley starter is essentially the same as Doc Z.'s...they used to sell his starters in the UK until they decided they could cut him out of the loop.
