Crankshaft rebuild - who do you recommend
« on: 10.05. 2011 22:57 »
Hi all,

Scotland calling. The big end and crank assembly on my 1952 A7 engine is goosed. Can anyone recommend someone (not SRM - I can't afford the prices) who could take the crank, rods and case and regrind with new shells plus fit timing side bearing and assemble? I have found JB Restorations so far but would welcome any other suggestions (and indicative costs if you have had this done).

Cheers in advance

Alan

Bound to be someone around you that does bike engines, I would ask a local bike club for reconsiderations.
Much easier to be able to go and see them if there's a problem and provided you take in the relevant BSA service sheet for regrinds they should be able to do all you need.

I get mine done locally and so far been good although a friend up the roads bike nipped up , looks like re-bored to tight, he's taken it back and they will check it and put right for free, would have been a bit of hassle had it to have been mailed.
All the best - Bill

Thanks for that - worth considering. Do you/anyone have a pdf of the relevant regrind service sheets?

Try Rob Wardle details below. He did my bottom end and roller conversion at the same time. Goes like a train.

Rob Wardle - 0191 4696428. He is in Felling in South Tyneside.

Comes with may recommendation and is nearer to Scotland for you.

Cheers

Another vote for Rob Wardle. He did a complete engine rebuild on my A7ss including the end feed conversion and needle roller bearings and The engine has been utterly dependable ever since. Highly recommended.

If you're near Dundee, I would recomend Engine Resources: 3 Lower Pleasance, Dundee
DD1, 5QU

Telephone: (01382) 223686
Fax: (01382) 229933

www.engineresource.co.uk/

The owner's got a Road Rocket and knows his stuff and is very helpful with advice etc. He did the crank and other jobs on my bike and I have had no problems.

Ha! I live just outside Dundee - never thought of Engine Resource and didn't know about the Road Rocket. Enquiry away - cheers

Small world - I'm half way between Dundee and Perth. Our club - the Scottish Classic Motorcycle Club meet the second wednesday of the month (7:30ish) at the Baiglie Inn, just at the bottom of Glen Farg. Maybe see you there some evening.

Hi John - I contacted the club a few months ago but couldn't find out when the meetings were - but you've just solved the problem. I'll see you there if there's a meeting in June...but on my Ducati MHR I think - unless there is some miracle and the A7 gets ready for the road in time.

*smiley4*T & L Engineering get my vote. I have just had my '53 A7 Star Twin bottom end given the T & L treatment. Absolutely top notch. A beautiful job, bottom end came back looking like new. Very reasonable prices and unlike others I have dealt with previously they don't drag their heels. They get the job done in good time. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them to anyone looking for for this type of work to be carried out. *smiley4*
