G'day Dave,
                Looks like the PO had done what you have and was missing the seal when you got it.
I am still worried that even with a new seal it won't work if the scroll is left on the center. As it turns a small gap will revolve around the seal, killing it.

I'm going to fill the gap, that should do it!

That is I am going to fill the scroll grooves and make a flat surface for the back of the clutch centre effectively making a smooth shaft. to turn in the oil seal

There is a product think it's called Easy Sleeve or Seal that is used when you have a shaft with a groove worn by a seal. it's a cylindrical shim that fits over the shaft giving a nice new surface for the seal. AutoPro or Repco will know. I used one years ago on a diff pinion, worked great.
The other problem is the sliding plate would need to slide very easily so as not to distort the seal when you tension the primary chain.
Someone else here has done it, might be Orabanda or Brien.

I have always tensioned the chain first and then put the sliding plate on loosley with the clutch centre going on to position the plate correctly, then tighten it all up.  Will check out that speedi sleeve, but I have created a solution that has worked out quite elegantly so if it works, good, if not, speedi sleeve it is!

It will be back together by tonight, and I will post your spindle back to you in the morning mate.

            The plate is meant to be sliding and will find its own position so there is no need to leave it loose.
Do you have the shouldered bolts securing the plate?

Hi Trev,

What I meant was that I adjusted the chain with out the plate on, put the plate on and set the clutch centre on the shaft so that the plate goes where it is meant to, then secure it.  I only have bolts/nuts/washers to fix the plate into position.  I'm unaware if there's anything different as standard because it appears that my sliding plate setup is not original.

Well it's all back together so I just have to wait for my jointing compound to cure up a bit before I put some ATF in the primary.  The oil seal went in perfectly and is all lined up so I do not expect any further trouble.  Will report back hopefully with the news that my bike is 100% oil tight.
