Yeah, Mate,
                    But make sure that you get the correct bolts. If you have the front section of the chain guard fitted to the inner case, you need the long bolts.
If not, the short ones will do.

Thanks boys,

I did order the shouldered bolts with the plate and a new felt washer.  I will put up with what I have until they arrive I think.  Anyone ever tried just using chain lube out of interest?  A restorer here told me that a few blokes do that instead of the bathing the chain in oil.

It's often suggested Hubie, not a good idea in my opinion, chain travels too fast and gets little in the way of ventilation, my mate tried it and reckons the chain was smoking.
Also oil on a clutch plate is not great but grease on a clutch plate would I think be terminal

I absolutely agree with Bill on this one, the oil is important to conduct the heat away from the chain to the alloy cases. I wouldn't take chances there.

Yep, unless your running a belt and sealed hub bearing oil is a must.
I did run a 4 spring & chain job dry when racing but lubed it every time I started it and rebuilt it after every meeting.
The scroll part runs inside the sliding plate as mentioned and the scroll directs oil back into the primary.
You'll get there mate, takes time to sort out the PO's bodges.
I'd hate to inherit one of my bikes !!! *eek*

I have achieved success! I have properly fitted the aforementioned oil seal, having to have taken a little bit of the scroll (not needed due to the seal) and made a small breather hole and the primary is now working nicely.  A 40mile run with no dripping or leaking.  See how it goes long term, original set of parts for the inner primary are on the way anyway.
