A7ss power?
« on: 20.06. 2011 14:21 »
Hi there, my good friend is finally upgrading from his trusted ajs 350 and is thinking of buying an 1956 A7ss, no matter how hard he's tried he cannot find any info on horse power, as he rides with his wife as pillion, he's interested in the difference the 500 would make compared to his 350 single jampot, can anyone help?

Would have been easier to convert his 350 to 500?

The A7SS is claimed to have about 30bhp.
I built mine with 8.5:1 pistons, a slightly bigger carb (28mm) and ported head, and I must say it goes very well, a Flash in standard tune has a hard time trying to keep up. Low-end torque is a bit less than with the 650s, but top end power when running on the cam is brilliant, and it is much smoooooother.
As you can tell, I really like mine.  *smile* *loveit*

G'day Wylyetom,
32bhp and would eat the 350. About 15 years ago I put my "57 A7SS top end and 357 cam onto my '51 plunger, also fitted a 30mm concentric. Sits on 70mph all day, will do 90 down hill with a tail wind ! Two up no worries, me 80Kg, Wife into 3 figures (sorry dear).
He will love it.
Cheers

The 350 AJS would be good for about 18 or so BHP, the A7SS will be like a rocketship in comparison.  *smile*

According to Haynes ( I can't believe I just typed that still they've got to be right sometime ..... ) 31bhp @ 6000 . I agree with the previous posts my first solo was a '59 SS and I really enjoyed it ,infact I'd still have it now and be quite content with it but for some lowlife who nicked most of it from my Dad's shed ,still got gearbox ( on present bike ) ski slope and wheels . He'll love it regards Bob.

Yes, the Shooting Star is a superb bike and everyone should have one, apart from the toerag who nicked mine back in the mid '80s!

Hmmmm.
Just had to have a look at Orabanda's dyno figures.
He can't get 30 hp out of a super rocket with rgs specs.
and despite the fact he's a sandgroper, I doubt if there is too many that can teach him something new about tuning.
Low 20s at the back wheel might be a bit more realistic for an A7.

On another note. gee his pictures are good to look at.
Do they really cause a problem on the forum.
Josh posted a lot of good stuff in photobucket way back and now all you see is a box with a X.
cheers

I'm not sure, but BSA figures must be at the crank.

My wife regularly rides pillion on my A7SS and it doesn't really seem to affect the performance at all - although I do find the suspension tends to bottom out more with her on the back unless I tighten it up one notch before I set off. But maybe that's just because I prefer quite a soft set-up for my solo riding.

I guess it's quite a sensitive question, Wylyetom, but an important one non-the-less, and that is "is your friend married to a fat lass"? In the interests of the future of your friendship, I would ensure that you are some miles away when your friend broaches the subject of his wife's weight with her in relation to this matter!

Hi guys, this post brings to mind the joke of how a long serving wife requested something that went from 0 ? 150 in 3 seconds for an anniversary present, her husband gave her a set of bathroom scales, cheers,Bob
