16" wheel with Ariel hub
« on: 19.07. 2011 20:16 »
My '57 has the Ariel hub.  I'm looking to put a 16" rear wheel on.  Anyone had good luck with this hub?

G'day Frenchy,
I like those hubs, light alloy and wider shoes than the BSA hub. You will find a WM3 rim with a 120/80 tyre will be about max width that will fit and clear the chain.
Cheers

I'm running the alloy ariel hub with a 16" rim on my race bike, admittedly with a dunlop sidecar racing tyre fitted.
Nice and strong and has wide shoes. Mine is also modified for rod operation. Cant fault it ;D

You've got a rad looking bike there.

I called Buchanan's and they can make me one with custom spokes and lace and true it, but it's over $400.

Thanks mate, its certainly my dream bike and all only possible due to a very clever engineer who built it up based on factory frame drawings (BB32R) and as many authentic BSA parts I could track down.
I'm running 2.5" morad (akront) rims that I had (a batch of 20) made through Central Wheel Components in Birmingham the UK, which are the right size for a 3.5" tyre but not commonly available. They were very helpful to a colonial. I managed to find homes for the rest through fellow big wheeled sidecar racers at cost, so they are sadly all gone. Sunbeam S7 also use 16" rims and of course many harleys, but all much wider rims than I was after. I'm running a narrower rim on the chair, which was a mistake as the tyre tries to roll off the rim on hard right handers, so needs to be run very hard to manage that. I recall thats effectively a 2" rim which would be adequate for a solo that doesnt have the side load issues that racing chairs face.
Sadly cant help you with wheel building we have a relatively local specialist, but not much use to you!
The full width hubs with a 16"rim does mean a very short spoke which is a bugger for the wheel builder. My front 8" double sided hub caused him real bother.
I've got a post on the forum under bikes, pics and members section called the road rocket racing sidecar project which follows much of my journey.
16" rims are a great way to lower a bike!

I just unlaced a 16" rim from my 57 Road Rocket project.  It has Ariel hubs and they were tight getting the spokes out!  I am returning a chopper to its PROPER form!  *smile* The spokes are mostly in good shape (a few rusty) and would work for a rider.  Let me know if you want them.

I was chatting to a mate today who commented he could never get his ariel rear hub to work, not sure if that was due to the cable operation. In my opinion the ariel hub is a lovely piece of design, and wide shoes!
With rod operation it certainly stops.

I agree RR. I luv mine but yes would be better with a rod operation. Careful set up with the square adjuster and good linings they work great.

Isn't a 16" wheel going to have some detrimental effect on ground clearance. When I had my wheels rebuilt I ummed and ahed over going for 18"ers but went with 19" in the end. I run with my rider footrests about horizontal so to speak. Having pretty much finished with running in - touched the left down last night ...

I'm certainly running 16" front and rear to lower the bike! But as I have 3 wheels doesnt effect cornering clearance ;)
