Hi all, does an A7 rigid have a hinged or two bolt type rear guard? thanks Terry in Australia

Hi Terry,
Just checked all the pictures of 47 and 48 rigid A7s I have and none are hinged ...

Just for info... I know its not an A7 or A10 but my 1952 girder/rigid frame M21 has a hinged rear mudguard, so the idea of hinges in this area was around then.

Mine is hinged but I don't think they are the original mudguards so I don't know what they were like.

Had a look trough books and adverts too, I find no hinges on A7 rigids.
Pic is from a 1949 sales pamphlet.

This has turned into an interesting question with different sources showing or saying different things. I just bought a little book called "The Essential Buyer's Guide, BSA 500 & 650 Twins, A7, A10, A50 & A65: 1946 to 1973", January 2008, by Peter Henshaw, Veloce Publishing. I don't know enough to know if Mr Henshaw should be the final arbiter, but here's a quote from his book (which, I believe, I may do without suffering the slings and arrows of copyright infringement accusation):

"Some had practical touches like a qd (quick detach) rear wheel, full chaincase and (on early A7s) a hinging rear mudgauard to make wheel changes easier."

In his book there is a picture of an A7 plunger with what appears to be a parting line in the rear fender where a hinge would be.

I was looking in the book for his email address, but it was not there. You might try to find him through www.velocebooks.com

Hi Terry, I scanned these from the 48' parts book. It looks like you could have a solid one piece guard or the hinged type. I have a friend with a unrestored original 48' model so I will contact him and see what it has on it.   Brian.

Hi Terry, as Brian says the '48 parts book shows an apparently unhinged guard, part no. 67-6752 but it is listed as " rear mudguard with fixed fittings". Also listed is part no. 67-6753 - "rear mudguard tail with hinge".
The straight stay, 67-6758, is shown with a forked end which would indicate a hinged guard. Stay length, if you need it, is 12 3/16", hole centre to hole centre.
Looking at pictures in books, it is difficult to tell. The official factory pictures appear to be touched-up photos and a lot of detail is missing.
 Trev.
