Go for it. They're so cheap on ebay how can you lose? Including cables.

Hi Ian,
The ebay speedos may fit a nacelle type headlamp?? They are quite deep, way more so than the Smiths chrono
The cable end is different so a new cable is also required
A friend of mine bought one, but didnt look closely enough at what he was buying as he wanted one for separate mounting  *sad2*

I bought an original Smiths few years ago. It cost a fortune to buy it cost a fortune to clean and calibrate and I had to take it back twice because it kept sticking. As others have said looking at the cost of the Indian ones they have got to be worth a try.

This is an interesting thread.  I haven't studied them after being told that the speedo cable connection was different.

However, my question is for those members who already have one:-  Would it be possible to make an adaptor to enable an original cable fit an Indian speedo unit?

Ibought one for about£20 and didn't order a cable (twit that I am ) I got cable modified with the right connector from Vernhill who did a great job except the the speedo end although the connector  deep enough to reach the speedo thread so I threw it in the draw where it still is. So if anyone could make an adaptor then I'd buy one. The speedo doe's look fine, regards BobH

Have a go yourself - often it's just dried up oil causing the pivots to stick.

The problem with mine is that it's ok up to 50-55 and then the needle goes right off the clock untill i get back to about 35-40, hit 50-55 and off it goes again, anyone got any ideas? I would'nt realy know quite what to be looking for. Cheers

Mine was doing that. When I opened it up there was a big lump of grease inside it. Cleaned it out with switch cleaner and it seemed fine, although haven't been on the bike much since then.

I did make the mistake of dismantling the odometer which flew apart and was the devil's own work to find out how it worked and reassemble.

There's some good stuff here from someone who used to fix them.

just a follow up to this thread...
The speedo I ordered from India arrived & looks quite good...
only problem was the BSA speedo cable end is much smaller than the one on the speedo...
I contacted the seller & voiced my disapproval re non mention of different fitment ..
He apologized & refunded the FULL AMOUNT plus shipping cost..

Regarding cleaning... Lidl in the UK are selling ultrasound cleaners tomorrow Monday 19th Dec about £20. Maplins also have a cleaner for £5 more but slight bigger bowl. I used an ultrasonic cleaner only a few days ago and it worked really well. I then used watch oil to lubricate afterwards.

I've also just bought a speedo from India via ebay and at £13 I cant go too far wrong! I'll write here more about it when it arrives, likely it'll be here after Xmas/New Year.
