Front brake nut
« on: 04.12. 2011 10:02 »
Hi,

I'm trying to remove the nut that holds front brake plate in place. I've got a socket and breaker bar on the nut but its not slackening. I just wanted to check that its not a lefthand thread?

Or warm it up a bit with a hair drier

Thanks guys. I'd already gone down the WD40 and blowtorch route.

Time for a second think.

A good punch and give each flat a wack or two, a bit brutal but often works

Hi Andy
Lots of good ideals coming in, hope one of them works, the very last option is to to drill small holes on the side of the nut then sharp chisel on the flat edge.

Absolutely endorse MG's ATF/acetone mix - followed his same advice the other day on a set of very dead rear struts. Could scarcely believe how well it worked, where diesel and the other usual stuff, including heat, hadn't done it. Definitely a wickedly effective brew. Shame about the theft of nail varnish remover  . . . wonder when she'll notice?

Had the same prob with the "new" A65. Put the wheel back in the forks with the caps done up and used an open end spanner to get enough force to undo it.

I got there and without having to visit Tesco to buy some nail varnish remover.
It was some clearer thinking that was really required.

I put the wheel outside of the forks and clamped up one end of the spindle with a fork cap. Used a metal bar and a block of wood to hold the brake plate still and then with everything else held very steady, and only about one grunt on the breaker bar, the brake nut came loose quite easily.

Even better, my '68 Triumph TLS brake fitted straight in,  as I'd anticipated after reading other posts on this forum. Now I just need to get the lugs on the TLS plate built up.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.
Andy
