OUCH
« on: 12.12. 2011 08:30 »
*sad2*  Ohhhh DEAR...I was sorting out bits that belong in my gear box today...
I know that the MAINSHAFT bearing had previously been replaced with a new one, the shaft has blued & scored from the failure,
What can be done? or is it a BIN JOB?   *sad2*

Also I noticed the Gearbox cam plate plunger seems to be eaten away just below the tip...
What would cause this???

Cheers.... Woz

That would be the layshaft in your pic, looks like it ran without oil. This can however be fixed by removing a minimum of material off the shaft until it is nice and smooth again, either in the lathe using a good carbide tool, or even better in a circular grinding machine. Then machine, fit and ream an oversize bronze bush to match the shaft, been there, done that, works perfectly okay in the A7.

No idea what happened to the plunger though, unless it came out of it's housing and was mangled through the gearbox at some time???

All the best, Markus

Wozza,
Maybe the new bush was too tight on the shaft.
Put the shaft in a lathe a give it a good polish with emery tape and have a good look at the bush.
Maybe a light ream will fix it if there's not enough clearance.

Thanks for the input guys... I'll have to get someone who has more engineering knowledge than me to have a look at what can be done..
Bob... I like the look of that roller bearing ... that would make it a lot smoother shift.
BSA-bill..  If ya get over the memory loss  ????   *dunno* I'd be interested in who you got it from ?

here is an evocative clip of Bill on maybe his last crossing of the nullabor (leaving Norseman, heading to South Australia).
Doesn't the A65 sound great as he pegs it out!

Just a little follow up...

I purchased a new .006" undersize bush & had the layshaft machined to match.
question... HOW do I install the bush? do I cool the bush in the freezer & heat up the Inner cover in the BBQ then press fit or ??????

sounds like a plan to me, bit of work with a pencil and straight edge can help line up the hole in bush
