NEB Engineering Belt Drive
« on: 26.01. 2012 21:00 »
Well I didn't expect that. Just removed the primary drive cover and half a cupful of oil came out. Thing is, it's got a NEB engieering belt drive conversion. I was under the impression the chain case should now be dry!! Although saying that, the reason I am dismantling is a severe oil leak from the gearbox final drive. Didn't think it would leak into the chain case though.

Wondering if someone could help me out. Has anyone got the installation instructions for the NEB engineering belt drive they could send me? Would be much appreciated. (That's if such a thing exists).

Also whilst the chain case is off is it an easy job to replace the engine main bearing oil seal? Might as well do that whilst its in pieces?
I have read the Haynes book of lies and it states its best to get the 61-3362 clutch sleeve extractor. is this good advice?

Any good advice appreciated. Cheers!

The oil in your case probably came from the engine.  Replace the seal while you're in there.

just had the engine srocket off and it does look like it came from the engine rather than the gearbox (which is a newish seal due to the belt drive conversion). Am I right in saying once i get the back of the chain case off its just a matter of prising out the main crankshaft oil seal?
cheers

G'day Darren, you don't need to remove the inner primary cover to get at the seal. Behind the cush & pully is a spacer that the seal works on. I use a magnet to pull it out then the seal is easy to replace.

Ah right, the spacer was the last thing I took off (it's bloody freezing in the garage). that must be the seal behind it. Got to get the rear case off anyway to replace the final drive seal on the gearbox :O(

Anyone know the best way to remove the inner clutch wheel?. It has two threaded holes which i inserted two bolts but didnt want to overtighten them and damage the edge of the outer wheel oil seal which is just behind them. I can't get my hub puller into the large holes. The woodruff key has disappeared well into the hole.

#9 on the pic is the spacer I meant.
Can't help with the clutch, don't know how those ones are held on.

Doh missed the pics.
You need a puller to attach by bolts into the threaded holes and work against the shaft.

Hi Daz,
You need to get or make a puller which will press on the Centre shaft of the gearbox  *ex* *ex*
NOT against the pulley wheel !!
A 2 legged puller with slots for the legs will be good then some suitable bolts instead of the puller legs will screw into the threaded holes in the clutch centre,
Here is a link to a good one,

http://sykes-pickavant.com/Portals/0/PDFs/Pullers/Pullers%202011/Pullers%20&%20Separators%20-%20Thin%20Jaw%20Gear%20Pullers%20&%20Kits.pdf

I have the 08600000 pullers which I find very useful!! I have made a couple of special legs for it to remove the crank timing gear

Please post some photos of the rest of the NEB when you have it removed?

Hi Darren,
Many thanks for the photos  *smile*
Since you last posted I was doing a little research into the belt drive setup on a T120 that I am working on
I think that it has a Hayward setup fitted??
Anyway a "Google" brought me here!!

http://www.britcycle.com/manuals/hayward_belt_drive_hints_and_tips.htm

This recommends oil in the primary if the outer case is fitted, it can run dry if the primary case is missing or well ventilated (kinda logical really  *eek* *eek*)
Basically the belt can overheat in a closed atmosphere!!!!
I had not heard of that before
Soooooo! maybe some oil in the NEB setup is in order ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????

CONFUSED *ex* *ex*

Huh!?!? Oil on a belt?? sounds a bit dodgy to me. In fact motor manufacturers recommend changing drive belts if contaminated with oil!
