Valanced mudguards for 1960 Super Rocket
« on: 16.02. 2012 09:21 »
My wish is to return my bike to the original painted valanced mudguards, does any body know a source for these, still have the original brackets and stays available. Found some fibre glass guards, not sure of style, any thoughts, experiences of fibre glass.
Rear was 15742-6904, front was 15242-6553

Thanks Goldy, already contacted them, "Though we made the originals for BSA the tooling was scrapped and can no longer help (only with RGS)"

Billy, I'm in the same shoes as you, been looking for years, until couple of years ago and found a new chrome front mudguard at WesScottCycles here in Fort Lauderdale USA.
Already been trough AutoCycle etc
In the end 6 months ago I found a chrome USA spec rear on Ebay, just keep looking, I'm still wanting a UK spec rear and let me know how it goes with Renovation.

Does renovation do Steel or fibre glass?

I know on Ebay the rears show up from time to time and they're EXPENSIVE

Hi just visiting and scanning the posts and strangley there is a topic on the ajs n matchless oc forum that concerns new bit's on old bikes and the mention of fibreglass  to some would cause a couple of heart attacks. I and others made the point that if it keeps the bike on the road and is safer to ride etc etc, we are all for it.
I find that here  on a10 there is a more at times relaxed attitude to originality, I just wonder if it's purely the rarity of parts or I don't know what?
Sorry to butt in *computer*
my rocket has got stainless RGS style guards and I am making the bridges and supports, slow work with a file!!
Cheers
I like bike, especially my 61'SR

Hi.
Finally found both front and rear on Ebay, the rear was pre 1958, so a bit of work was required, the front was not a BSA, unknown origin but looked the right style, again some work required with brackets and welding. Both were shot blast and set to the painter, the finish was a great job, and bike back on the road after 29yrs.

Billy,
I would say that the front guard is BSA as in A65.

I may regret it but have just splurged on a fleabay front mudguard from India listed as :
BSA A10 FRONT FENDER 1959 MODEL

it is the non front stay type that has less valance in front of the wheel.
I'm hoping it will suit my '60 super rocket.
Need to find the front mudguard stay next...bought the y brackets from Draganfly.

Can anyone confirm some key identifying features of the later rear mudguard.
Some pictures of the circa '60 super rockets show the rear guard valance tapering away (particularly US ones in chrome), whereas other pictures show the fully valanced type.

likewise what the holes in the side might be for?

Think the forward hole would be for the stay "hockey stick" or the later type & the rearwards hole may have been for the optional grabrail ?
I own a 1955/56 B.S.A Swinging Arm "Golden Flash" , had it since 1976 .

Hi Rocket Man.
The hole near to the arrow head stay hole is for right angle seat mounting bracket, the other hole I guess would be for grab handle, but not required for 1960 model as this was fitted with roll on stand.

thanks bud, must get a late parts book, do have one for my road rocket (54/55) race bike but so many subtle differences by '60. I'm guessing right angle brackets allow for a lower seat dispensing with the strap across the guard (I had made one up).
The only genuine bits I have from the back tinwear are the arrowhead stays. The mudguard was obtained originally for the race bike but not suitable for 16" wheels so seems to be suitable for the super rocket (Not sure what year this guard is or what the holes did). but am missing tail light fittings/seat brackets/grab handles...Need to get my head round the detailing in that area. Being a UK import am planning to put it into UK trim.
