A10 Sludge Trap

Now I know this is a dumb question but it needs to be asked anyway. Today I took the sludge trap out of my crank to clean it before the rebuild. Now I got the end plugs out (eventually) and the one with the tits was on the roller bearing side. I took the bolt out of the flywheel and I drifted off to the toilet.

A friend of mine decided to knock the sludge trap out while I was in the loo and the idiot did not take note of which way round it was. As you will know one end has a slightly bigger end. Its years since I have done one, the parts book does not actually show it so which way round does it go ?

As I am asking that I will also ask is it necessary nowadays to centra punch the new plugs or is loctite sufficient ?

You will find that the tit fits the small diameter.

The tit holds the small end of the tube at the drive side end of the crank. The wide end of the tube goes at the timing side end with the plain plug. You should see the drilling before you fit the plug.

The theory is that oil is pumped into the centre of the tube and out of the two holes facing inwards leaving sludge in the tube. Oil is then in the main big end gallery and is pumped out to the big ends. Simples.
