Welsh Welder Suggestions? (or Herefordshire)
« on: 09.03. 2012 19:29 »
The crack in my crankcase (in the worst buy/bike in the world) is getting worse, I have started stripping the engine out, can anyone recommend a good ally welder in mid Wales? Im sure srm would do it, but I dont think I could afford! And wheres the best place to get a plunger gasket set, there seem to be countless versions/types/makers/suppliers. Cheers all. Oh, and theres a thumbnail sized chunk missing from the front skirt of my piston, at the bottom, should I replace it or can I get away with leaving it (I'm horribly skint) Theres no crud in the sump, so I'm guessing the crankcase crack and the chunked piston happened together, a while ago. Please nobody tell me to do the whole engine properly, I figure a shagged out bike on the road is better than a pile of bits awaiting funds in the shed.

Sorry I can't help with a welder...I live too far away.

But if you can give me more details about your piston I just might have a spare S/H one kicking about.  Can you let me know how much oversize yours is?  What compression ratio is it?? and is it a split skirt type???

It would be best if you could also post a picture of your piston here on the forum.  No promises but I might be able to match it up!!

Cheers for the offer, I'll clean it up tomorrow, see if I can see any oversize marks. It looked standard size (I diddn't see any obvious + signs) its a concave top and split skirt. I'll have a go at pics.

Sounds like I also might just have a split skirt and domed piston, no idea what the oversize is... will find out tomorrow. Let us know what yours is, if its the same as mine I'll post it to you. I've put up details of how to post pictures in one of the other recent threads, not sure which one it is now, should not be hard to find.  wink2

Hi LJ, thanks for the offer but by domed do you mean convex? because my pistons dome down, which Ive never seen before!

Hi Ian. Yes, a number for him would be great, Thanks.

Ok, If your pistons "Dome Down" they are low compression.  I would need to know it they have split skirts and how much they are oversize or standard. In the meantime I'll see what I have spare as low compression.
