Will an O ring chain fit std sprockets?
« on: 12.03. 2012 10:05 »
I tried to search Past topics as I'm sure this has come before but nothing came up. Also not sure which of the sections this topic should go under.

My question is can one fit a 530 size o ring chain to a 56 s/a gf without problems?

Or do you have to use 5/8 x 3/8 non o ring chain?

 G'day KiwiGF,
it will but. The O ring chain is wider and a HD O ring chain is wider again. So it might rub on the chain guard.
As a side note, the O ring chain will rob a little power as it's stiffer to bend around the sprockets.
Cheers

Great and thanks I thought the chains were interchangeable.  An o ring chain it us for me then.

I've only got a std chain guard not fully enclosed so I thought a o ring would last best

depending on the state of your sprockets you could also consider going 520, a size run on high performance moderns and also used on swing arm singles so available off the shelf.
My race A10 is running 520 plain chain -so even less energy loss than a 530
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

I don't understand.
1  What do you mean by 'depending on the state of your sprockets"?
2  Are you running 520 (5/8 x 1/4) on the rear?  Is that because it is more efficient than the 530? Are sprockets easy to obtain?

For the majority of riders who only do lowish mileage, is there any real advantage for using O ring?

If anyone has used standard O ring, can they post if it was a straight fit or if they have any problems?

520   15.88mm   6.35mm   10.16mm 5/8 x 1/4
525   15.88mm   7.85mm   10.16mm 5/8 x 5/16
530   15.88mm   9.53mm   10.16mm 5/8 x 3/8

Keith,
re my point 1; if your existing sprockets are not worn, then to fit a 520 you have an additional cost (of buying B series sprockets available off the shelf). If the sprockets are shagged then you are incurring this cost anyway and a 520 is no more expensive.
point 2 Yes I run heavy plate non oring 520 on my race A10 sidecar. It rarely needs adjusting and has less resistance and is vitally narrower (my tyres distort on cornering) and yes the swing arm B series ran 520 as std anyway.

There is nothing wrong with oring, it requires less maintenance as it keeps the lube in better and the grit out but  I use non oring chain (just my personal preference) as I would always be a bit dubious of an oring fitting the limited clearance without chewing the tyre or rubbing on the swing arm.

A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

Yes most racers use cheap chain. Less drag (power loss). By the time it needs adjusting it's in the bin. At least mine were. I could buy a 10 meter roll for the same cost of one good chain.
A good 520 Oring chain will fit and not rub on anything and last for about 25-30 thousand miles on an A10.

Thanks for the replies, good information.

Will now make up my mind which way to go.

One further point, which is the "best" chain lube for O ring chains?  I read somewhere either they get flung off or they don't penetrate?

I just cleaned my chain guard and some of the grease was very gooey.  Probably the time I tried a spray on grease?

Recently purchased a new can of "Linklife" type grease, I've had the old one, Duckhams Chainguard far too many years.

Hi Keith,

re. chainlube any of the leading brands have worked for me on o ring type chain,on my Kawasaki I can normaly get 500 miles between applications in dry conditions, strangely enough the A10 chain seems to need a spray every 100 miles or so.

A good brand is Kalguard if you can get it,(stays on in wet conditions)Silkolene,Castro and Mucoff have worked well for me.

My local Halfords only sells chain lube for dry conditions. Ha Ha. (See country of origin flag at bottom of message).
