What's this on my forks?
« on: 26.03. 2012 11:09 »
Does anyone know what this lug is on my forks. I've just bought a 1960 SA Gold Flash and the right hand lower fork leg doesn't look like any of the As or Bs I've owned before. The forks are also chromed  - was this standard on any models?

Hi Tim,
those lugs are for the 7 inch brake plate anchor and cable adjuster
the fork bottoms are probably from a B31 or similar
Your Flash has been upgraded to the 8 inch single sided hub, which is regarded as one of the best brakes available
the original Flash fork bottoms have a bolt on cap

Thanks John

I'll stick with the 8" brake and am tempted to grind the lug off, can you see any problems with that?

Tim,
Have a look at it and I think you will find that the lug is brazed on. It should come off with a bit of heat, maybe a lot!
If you grind it off, you will need to paint the leg so you may as well get it off with heat, probably be quicker.

Hi Tim,
I would leave the lug in place,
If you heat it or grind it off theres a chance that the fork bottom could/would distort and cause the bush to jam inside it when the fork compresses ???? ???? ???? ????

John

good point, I may have to resort to low temperature grinding (hacksaw/file!).

Could use it for a mount for a front brake light switch. It's not doing any harm, and could later be swapped for the correct leg.

I would also leave the lug in place, for the following reasons, it is a shame to cut original BSA parts up, it has had a different brake fitted already so not original for your bike,  is not doing any harm, does not look awful, also at some stage you may decide to revert to original and then the fork leg would be available to some one else also looking for original fork legs for their model, these usable spares are becoming more difficult/expensive to source.

If it were my bike,
I'd get a nice shiney pre-decimal coin and araldite it on there.
That way if anyone looking over the bike notices it, and asks why it's there.
You can say:

"The front brake was already pretty good, but with this fitted I can stop on a sixpence"

Cheers,
Iain

I like your reasoning, I think I may go for your solution, at least the lug would have a purpose then (I don't like things that have no purpose). Now - where do I find a sixpence ????
