1961 super rocket carb
« on: 21.04. 2012 11:58 »
having completed the rebuild i took it for a short spin to get it motd not far 4 miles round trip,it ran fine but the plugs which i took out to fit the new champions were sooty
the carb that is fitted is a 932/L301 concentric which i know is incorrect and is i think off a norton commando
not knowing jet sizes etc that are in it i have decided not to bother trying to do any thing with it ,so off to the burland site for a new one
it would seem i need a 389 /46 so far so good then i get the option of choosing jets etc should not be too much of a problem selecting those(but if any one wants to share the correct sizes it will save me searching them out)
but i have no clue whatever when it comes to selecting the slide cutaway i can select from no2 to no 5 in increments of .5 now i am struggling so if any one can help i would be most greatful and should it be fitted with an air filter or just the velocity stack (or bell mouth as im used to calling it )
thanks in advance guys

Buy as many new carburettors as you like, from anywhere you like, but you won't know the mixture is right until you or someone, goes through the well publicised Amal tuning procedure.

if the plugs are sooty after a rebuild I would not worry about, just want it slightly rich until you get some miles on the clock.

thanks goldy i know what you mean pontless doing too much till it settles down after the rebuild
triton thanks for that but if i am to order the correct carb i at least need a start point to place the order
am i being nieve cos i cant see that every bike rolling off the production line went through the tuning procedure and super rockets for example vary too much in the basic jet sizes etc and cutaway?
sadly after reading and re reading the tuning guide it might as well be written in arabic

 G'day rocket111,
looking at my books a 1 5/32" 389 25 pilot #3 slide .106 needle jet clip pos 2. The mains range from 290 to 420 so that is where the tuning comes in. 290 for stock SR with air filter and mufflers to 420 for no air filter and long v/tubes and straight through pipes.
Most of your riding is on the needle (jet and clip pos).
Cheers

thanks for that muskrat ,it will at least give me a starting point ,it has a bell mouth on it right now but never really been a lover of those on road bikes not quite sure however what the air filter arrangement would/should look like on a 61 super rocket
if it ever stops raining long enough i look forward to putting a few miles on it to bed it all in then its off with the rocker box as it has developed a leak on the left ,despite my having made the gaskets slightly bigger and thicker myself (2/10 need to try harder )lol
