BSA Service Sheet No. 813A covers this matter. Six pages, including diagrams.
If you can't get this locally, email me and I'll scan them to you.

this thread's got itself a bit split between frame data and wiring diagrams .  . I for one know nothing about side-by-side dynamos and alternators (presumably wholly independent circuits and batteries?), and would find more info on police models fascinating.
If one had an alternator primary chaincase, plus a late clutch with cush-drive, how easy would it be to stick an alternator on any A7/10 alongside or instead of the dynamo? How different is the crankshaft in the driveside mainshaft department? Has anyone done it (short of buying Mr Plod's version)?
I muse, because I like alternators a lot . . . Although I freely acknowledge that dynamos work very well, considering their limitations . . .

Groily, the alternator and generator were connected together and controlled by the headlight switch. I have a circuit diagram in my service sheets.
The crankshaft is different. There was also an A7 version made, I saw one before it was stripped and it's components donated to more worthy projects. [who wanted an A7 in those days?]
There were two versions of the outer chain case. One was a solid casting and the other had a chromed plate over the alternator as per early Triumph.

Thanks a lot Trevinoz - just printed it off for reference.
Thought the cranks would have to be different, shame, otherwise it would be a nice conversion especially if one used a later 2 wire alternator which can be better regulated. I always envied guys with Tri 110s etc with mag and alternator when I was young. As you say though, who wanted a lot of these bits in those days!
Many thanks
Bill

Groily, you would have been disappointed with the alternator as there is only enough space for , I think, the RM15 alternator.
Can still be connected for 12V though.
Attached is the Police model supplement. It might take a few posts because of size.

Thanks again Trevinoz - all v interesting. RM15 better than nothing - but I'll stick with what I have on the A. Have just loved playing with an alternator B lately, which has given me all sorts of daft ideas! That has a decent (later) 2 wire jobbie, a new modern combined reg/rect and supports ignition and excellent lights . . . Enough idle thinking - back to fixing other things . . .

Nice work, Trev. In addition to these sheets, I sent BMH the wiring diagrams so he should pretty much all set.
Let us know how it works for you, BMH.
