On inspecting the above I find they are glazed ,
can this be removed by bead / grit blasting or is the "nature" of the material ruined ..been standing many years ?

Hi there. Not sure wether brake material deteriates through age I suppose it will depend on how the material was stored but if they look OK apart from the glazing if they were mine I would rub off the glazing with some coarse emery paper and use them provided there is a worthwhile thickness of lining.

 Yep, every time I have a wheel off I give the shoes a quick hit with 40 grit, drums as well.
