I think it should be GA7 9230. Do you have photos of bike? Here in Australia, South Australia to be exact, the Police models were somewhat of a hybrid.

GA7 9230 is a 1960 frame. As to what model it was I have no idea. Here in South Aust the later A65's had a "P" stamped in the engine no. when police models but I dont know if the A10's had the same. As far as I know the frames didnt have any marking to indicate what models they were. I have a A10 parts manual with a section in the back that covers the differences for the police models and it doesnt mention the frame being any different. The main difference I can see is that the police models had a alternator as well as a generator. I think you would have to get access to factory records to know for sure just what model that particular frame was used on.   Brian.

Its a BSA spares book that covers the 1960 and 1961 models, catalogue no. 00-5086. It has a section in the back that covers the police models. If you have trouble finding one I could scan and e-mail you the bits you need.   Brian.

Brian, the later A10 Police bikes in Sth Oz were a bit of a lash-up. They had separate head light and long fork shrouds as per export Super Rocket, full width front brake but single side rear brake and swing arm to suit as per 1954-55.
The guards were as 1960-63.
There is or was one in the Birdwood Museum labeled as 1958 Police Special. It had generator only and siamezed pipes.
I have a late S.A. Police BSA, but it is a T65.
I must add that the Police A10 above has 4 cast lugs on the frame down tube. At least one of these has been made into a RGS replica here in NSW as they are the perfect donor frame.

Thanks Trev, although I live in S. Aust and have seen several ex police A65's I have never seen a ex police A10. I have been up to Birdwood but cant remember seeing the one you mention. I find it strange that S.Aust used BSA twins for many years but these days you hardly see any A10's at all, you would expect there to be lots of them.   Brian

Brian, here's a couple of pictures of the Police A10 at Birdwood . Quite a few years ago. You can see that it is labeled incorrectly.

Thanks for the photos Trev, I dont think that bike was in Birdwood when I was last there as I am sure I would have remembered it. I see what you mean about them being a lash up of bits.

Dragging up an old post here but traced it via a google search. Great to see the pics of the Birdwood museum bike - thanks Trev. As per another post I have recently bought an A10 with the fork shrouds, headlight, rear brake as described. Something else I noticed is that the handlebars are the same that look wider than normal - must look for any clamp marks where that screen is attached. Mine has a dusting sidecar which may be a later addition, that is if it actually is a police bike. Do you know if SA police used dustings or any sidecar? No sign of an alternator that I could see but it is missing the rear chain guard - do you think that could be a clue? Also there is a funny frame set up on the rear guard that could be for panniers. I couldn't spot where the 4 lugs were that you were referring to on the downtubes - is that related to the crash bar mount?

Any ideas why the lash up? Surely it would be easier to just send them off the production line as is rather than put older bits on one? My numbers suggest mine is a 1962 model. Have sent an email to SA police historical society and Brian suggested they may have nos for bikes.

Any thoughts on the matter appreciated. Doesn't matter too much to me, I like the bike but if there is history there it is good to preserve it I think.

Also any thoughts on if they used the siamese pipe as on this bike or a later addition?

Hi Craig,
The four lugs I referred to are the front engine mountings.
On the last frames they were four heavy cast items. Previously there were only two and if you go back to 1954 there were none, only welded on tubes.
It seems that your bike has the single sided back hub which was Police.
If you go looking for a chain guard, don't get one for a 1962 A7/10.
You will need the 1954/5 or RGS type.
  Trev.

Thanks Trev, I understand that. The upper 2 are large cast items and the lower more like tubes welded on, but the frame number fits into 1962. Thanks for the tip on the chainguard.
