One thing that helps is to crack the oil feed line at the pump until oil leaks out.  This ensures the pump has oil right away.  I had to do this on my last rebuild, as the pump inlet was "air bound" and couldn't begin to pump.  I also cracked the return line at the pump to see when it was beginning to return and to provide a unrestricted return to expedite circulation.
