I have got to share this story, after reading comments below about cartridge starter; it brings back memories.

I grew up on a sheep station (smallish by West Australian standards; about half a million acres).

Every September a team of shearers would arrive for about 3 weeks work shearing the flock.

There was a large dam close to the woolshed, and it usually had ducks on it.

One year, one of the young shearers asked my father if he could shoot some ducks. My father (original owner of my '51 plunger Flash), had a wicked sense of humour, and was a sh_t stirrer of the highest order.

"No problems son; you can borrow the single barrel shotgun - and here are the cartridges".

Now dad had a 1940's Caterpiller grader, which used starter cartridges to fire the engine into life. They were the same size as the 12 gauge shotgun cartridges, and this is what he gave to the young shearer!

So, end of shift that day, and the young man stalks up the side of the dam, jumps up and lets fly at the ducks. They all take off undamaged for safer climes, but the shearer gets knocked a couple of paces back.

he repeats this ritual for a week, and nursing a bruised shoulder, returns the gun & cartridges to Dad conceding defeat and complaining that he had never shot so badly in his life!

It's a strange old world - watching Wartime farm on TV tonight what should they do but start a Field Marshall with cartridge and wick

on the Field Marshall that I am on in photo, the boss wouldn't let me cartridge-start: I had to put the de-compressor wheel in a spiral groove on the huge external flywheel, and wind the crankhandle like crazy, and hope that I had enough speed up when the decompressor fell off the flywheel. Mostly it worked, and would blow perfect, huge smoke rings for the first couple of revs (single cylinder diesel). Actually maybe I should be on the Panther forum (except I havent got a Panther and I love A7/10s)

Yep heard the old guys on about the rings also often a driver sitting on the tractor would be continually pushing his cap back on his head as it crept forward with every stroke of the piston  *doh*

Good one olev. Mine don't sound like that, and about 60kph faster than the cafe.
I went over to Black Springs the other week looking for Gav. And I did pass a tractor.
Cheers

A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

Hello Julian.
I realise this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you may have some info on the alloy heads you mention. Years ago, when I thought I was going to build an A7 SS, I acquired one of the 67-1102 heads in very good condition, but subsequently put it in the loft and forgot about it. I would now like to fit this to my standard A7, having found out that my iron head is cracked ( only discovered when years of powder coating was removed ), but I don't have the two little carburettor extensions shown in your photo. Do these pieces have a part number that you are aware of ? At least then I would know where to start looking........unless anybody else out there can help me with the part numbers ?
I did think about converting to single carb, but BSA part 67-35 doesn't fit - is there a similar one that you know of for the SS 67-1102 head ?  Any information will be most welcome.
Regards
Norman

The part # Trev gave is the single carb manifold. I have one here somewhere. This one on ebay isn't a bad price.
