"Made In England"

Oh wise folk of the Forum (and anyone else who is not Australian);

Does anyone have a definitive answer, as to whether the pre-unit bikes were shipped from the factory with a "Made In England" transfer on the frame?

Yesterday a 69 year old who has been riding and involved with BSA's since his teens, was adament that A10's / A7's were built with this marking on one of the front down tubes.

don't know about export ones but my Flash had no such sticker and can't recall any others

 Think I may have seen some triumphs with it in the '70's, but that was probably more a marketing ploy to remind folk, that England still existed

Hi Richard; My Dad's '61 GF that I now have was purchased from a USA dealer in the original shipping crate. (I helped uncrate it.) This is a current picture of the right side of the neck area.

Hi Richard,

Am positive that "some" but not "all" had the sticker on the right hand frame tube or headstock.
At least all of the bikes (Norton, Triumph and BSA) I have seen in crates DID have it but that means nothing with English suppliers as anyone knows

                          This decal seems to have been on all of the 1960 onwards frames but I have seen one on a 1958 frame but can't say whether it was original.

Not on my '56 Flash, (but thats no surprise with the state it was in  ), and I certainly didn't have one on my 1957/8 A7 back in my youth...........

I am the 2nd owner of a 56 Road Rocket originally shipped to Canada and it had neither a stamping nor a decal with Made in England on it. I have seen bikes at shows with these decals, but I suspect they were put there by the owner and not by the manufacturer.

This is my '62 Rocket's headstock gusset with decal in position as per original.

Hi Richard

Yes the Made in England transfer was applied to the late A10 frames, my guess would be from 1958. Here's another pic of a 1959 frame with original paint. This script was a BSA only transfer, applied to the headstock on the twins up to 1970. For the OIF bikes it moved to the frame down tube & was also used on the Triumph range for the first time.

That clears up the 'Made in England' sticker found anywhere on the front of the frame - the same question goes for the 'BSA Piled Arms' transfer that is sometimes placed on the front of the headstock - is this a restorers embelishment or an original decal. I have had A10s with and without it on.

                 The headstock decal was applied to plunger and rigid frames but not sure when it was discontinued.
Not on swinging arm frames.
