new sump plate?
« on: 09.10. 2012 14:45 »
I'm leaking some oil from my sump plate cover, so I pulled it and the gasket looks pretty ancient.  I'm replacing a stripped stud, and while I'm at it I'm thinking of getting a new cover with a drain plug.  It's a 57 A7.  I was looking at this one from Burton.  Anyone have good luck with it?  Or a better suggestion

Hi, I have the same A7 (1956) and I have done also this sump plate. This is handy if you need to empty your sump from time to time. You need longer studs though, so buy them at the same time ......

Hi Chaps
This was posted just at the right time. I bought my barn find last week. It was put away after the owner rebuilt it and became ill. I got it started yesterday and it ran fine with it's new pistons. BUT I went to change the oil today and one of the ump studs has stripped when I put it back together. The stud is still there,
Question will it unscrew with pipe grips. I would appreciate any advice on doing this as I don't want to pull the engine out. I too intend to put a new posh sump cover once it is out. Has anyone got the part numbers for these studs and a quick supplier.
Many thanks

If you put on an alloy sump cover you will need longer studs, these are often sold with the new cover I think the last one I got had hex socket head studs but longer ordinary stuads are available

My new plate from SRM, I think, was supplied with stainless allen screws which I used in the place of studs.
My engineering apprenticeship memory tells me studs were a more reliable method of fixing if frequent disassembly is likely - and in this case I decided not !
The sump plug is easy to remove for draining wet sumped oil.

Hi Frenchy.
I fitted replacement sump plate and drain plug recently, as original sump plate with integral filter was damaged, yes longer studs are required, but I used allen head socket screws. Can report no issues, but so much easier in use.

Hi Frenchy;
With mine, I used 2 nuts tightened against each other on the stud and they came out with very little effort even tho they were original installed studs.

Also, I expect u will get several replies like this one, but if you do install the alloy sump cover with a separate screen u will have to be careful to get the hole in the screen aligned with the scavenge pipe as u did with the original cover. If it doesn't line up on the first try u can try flipping the screen over. This happened to me with the SRM cover. If not aligned correctly the ring on the screen could partially block the pipe and allow any bits of gasket sealer, etc to  restrict oil flow to the oil pump. Anyway, whichever cover u get will require longer studs or bolts as the new cover is thicker. SRM supplies them with their kit.

You can use those filter screens with an oem sump plate with the gauze removed with tin snips/knife and braze a nut on the  sump to make a drain plug.

Just another option and no need for new studs.

If you fit this unit put it on so that the drain bolt is on the right side.
Two reasons,
1) nut falls out ( or you forget to replace it ) oil pours out to the left and not directly under your rear tyre.
2) makes it easy to drain the sump with bike on side stand.

That's exactly what I did (except I soldered it).
