1954 Flash Speedo
« on: 07.10. 2012 15:51 »
My speedo has many miles on it and stopped dead, the face has faded badly, can someone please point me towards a replica that works in MPH.
I do not show the bike so I am not spending £££££££££'s for a real one.

Doubt You will be able to find anything other than a Smiths Chronometric ?
The alternative would have to be correctly geared to give an accurate reading ..couple of speeding fines would have paid for a restration on Your existing clock .

I have a replica Chronometric from India I think ..dont know if it would work or not ?

Steve..
I own a 1955/56 B.S.A Swinging Arm "Golden Flash" , had it since 1976 .

The Indian ones would look alright in a nacelle setup, but they have a deeper body so it might interfere with reflector. Somebody here might help in that regard. You should order it with a cable the right length too.

Before springing for a chronometric I put a bicycle speedometer on my A10. The model I got from Cateye was a Velo 5, now discontinued, but still on the bike along with  the chronometric. Properly calibrated according to wheel diameter, I believe the Cateye is quite accurate and it closely matches the chronometric. You can get the Cateye brand (and, I'm sure) many others, wired or wireless. A Cateye Velo 7 (wired, for up to 125 MPH) would set you back around US $30.

I eventually bought a rebuildable chronometric because I think having working history is a big part of what's cool about the bike. Be sure you don't give up on your chronometric. If you do your own work on the mechanics of the bike, you might be able to deal with the repair and cleanup of the speedo. There are some pictures of speedo guts here on the forum. Let us know if you want to be steered to them.

Generally the problems with chronometrics are fairly straightforward to sort out - mine was full of grease and after cleaning out worked fine. They are fiddly to work on but there's a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself.

The pics Andy found come from a website run by Dennis Quinlan, who has forgotten more about speedos than the rest of us know. There's lots more stuff on his site.

Found a replica at Hitchcocks Motorcycles website, same face and will take an English speedo cable apparently, £46.00 inc post vat etc. Will hold my breath and see. I will update this site when I get it.
