Front brake cable adaptor required ?
« on: 05.11. 2012 17:25 »
Hello , I am searching for an adaptor to shorten the front brake cable slightly ..I have had these in the past , they fit over the lever end of the cable and enter the front brake lever .
They are slotted to slip over the cable and sit between the end of the cable & the front brake lever bracket ..dont know what they are called other than "adaptor" ?

Thanks in advance  ,

Steve ...

Shortening the inner by lengthening the outer in effect. I tend to use stuff from old bicycle levers, you can usually make something work from those.

Thats the principle .
There used to be a purpose made item which slotted over the cable & inserted into the lever clamp .
Used to have a slot to allow the cable to fit through .

Why not just shorten the inner wire?

Trev ,
I have no soldering equipment or experience in cable shortening .
The adaptor would be sufficient .

You must be the only pommie bike owner in the world who doesn't have a soldering iron?

My local MOT guy uses a butane gas torch, I invested in a solder bowl, good bit of kit, now just waiting for the price of solder to become realistic  ;)

Well I'm not sure that we're helping here. I'd go with the word 'adjuster' as search criteria, but I stand by my coment of using the adjusters off old bicycle levers. In fact I did this very mod on my choke cable at the weekend. If you have a bicycle shop nearby they usually have any amount of carp out the back and may well let you have a rummage about.

As an aside, my rear brake cable is too long (both inner and outer). Whilst in the longer term I'll be looking to construct a rod conversion I have in the meantime been putting off making a shut and cut on this one. The idea of standing on a nipple I've soldered on myself being a little off putting.

Hi Steve

I have heard these "adjusters" called slotted stepped collets - probably incorrectly!

I have used these myself in the past and are useful for taking up any stretch in the inners without resoldering the nipple. When a new cable is fitted it can be made to the correct length and the "adjuster" removed.

You could try Tom Johnson at JJ Cables 01926 651470 or Speedy Cables http://www.speedycables.com/index.html Speedy also renovate and recalibrate Smiths Instruments.

Not too difficult to turn on a lathe if you have access to one and cut the cable slot with a hacksaw.

Hi Steve

Glad to hear that you have resolved your problem. There is a lot of sub-standard stuff out there and with the cheaper cables the inner stretches and the outer collapses over time and eventually you run out of adjustment, which I guess has happened to your cable.

Ted at JJ cables is a top guy - really knows his stuff. I get all my cables from him. He is very good with non standard lengths - just send him the old cable and tell him how much longer or shorter and he will make a new one with the same fittings.

Yes, that's the bit that drops off and rolls down the nearest drain when your throttle cable snaps / sticks.
